TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team improved 13-3 winning its fifth game in a row while outscoring four opponents so far at the Washburn Invitational sponsored by Coldwell Banker and the Horak Legacy Group 37-2 with a 7-1 win over Minot State and an 8-0 over Minnesota Crookston. The six-game weekend will wrap up on Sunday with Augustana at 2 p.m. and Rockhurst at 4 p.m. at Gahnstrom Field.
Game 1- WU 7-1 over Minot State
The Ichabods jumped on the board in the bottom of the first scoring three runs after
Marrit Mead started the inning off with a single and then after stealing second, she came around to score on a double by
Hailey Neira.
Autymn Schreiner talked and then
Jaycee Ginter singled scoring Neira.
Kaylee Wagner had a ground out that scored Schreiner.
Washburn (13-3) remained scoreless until the third inning when with two out,
Jaden LaBarge homered and then after Wagner tripled, an RBI single by
Mariah Wheeler sent Wagner to the plate as the Ichabods went up 5-0.
In the fourth, Washburn added two more runs when Mead started the frame with a double and then after a double by Schreiner, Mead scored. An RBI single by Ginter sent Schreiner home as the Washburn advantage moved to 7-0.
The Beavers scored one in the top of the fifth for the final run of the game by either squad.
Mead, Ginter and Schlader each had two hits with Ginter driving in two of the Ichabod seven runs. In the circle, Ginter improved to 6-1 striking out five in the win.
Game 2 – WU 8-0 over Minnesota Crookston
In game two of the day, Washburn scored six in the bottom of the first sending 11 batters to the plate to take a commanding lead rolling to the win. Mead began the onslaught with a double and would score on a throwing error by the catcher. After Schreiner singled and Ginter drew a walk, with two outs
Ellington Hogle drew a bases-loaded walk scoring Schreienr. A
Madi Moore single up the middle scored two and then
Alexis Tanguma singled to right sending both Moore and Hogle home.
In the second, Washburn added two more when LaBarge singled to center scoring Ginter who walked earlier in the inning. LaBarge then stole second and Boles scored on a throwing error as the Ichabods pushed their lead to 8-0.
That was all the offense the Ichabods needed as
Sadie Walker struck out six scattering three hits improving to 6-2 on the season.
Mead, Neira and Schreiner – the top three batters in the Ichabod line up – all had two hits each while Ginter and Boles each scored two runs and Moore and Tanguma each drove in two runs.
