LAST MEETING WITH MISSOURI SOUTHERN
(Jan. 17, 2024) TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods moved to 8-0 at home with a 70-65 win over Missouri Southern on Wednesday night in Lee Arena rallying from a seven-point deficit early in the second half for the victory.
With the Ichabods (11-5, 7-3 MIAA) trailing by a game-high seven with 17:40 to play in the game with the Lions in front 38-31,
Jack Bachelor ignited a 15-2 run over the next 5:05 scoring nine points during the run pushing the Ichabods up 46-40.
Missouri Southern (6-10, 4-6 MIAA) cut the Washburn lead to three at 53-50 after hitting back-to-back 3-pointers, however the Ichabods used a 5-0 mini run to go up 58-50 with 7:12 left. Washburn them would miss its next five shots as the Lions used an 8-0 of their own to tie the score at 58 at the 3:21 mark.
The teams traded a pair of free throws and a jumper as the score remained deadlocked at 60, but Bachelor hit a pair of free throws and
Andrew Orr hit a turnaround jumper putting Washburn up by four with 76 seconds to go.
The Lions cut the lead to two with under a minute to go, but the Ichabods finished the game 6 of 6 from the free throw line (4 of 4 by
Brady Christiansen, 2 of 2 by Bachelor) en route to a 15 of 15 Ichabod team performance for the five-point win.
Washburn trailed by one at the break at 30-29 after the Lions hit 7 of 14 3-point attempts in the opening 20 minutes after entering the game averaging 6.9 per contest. For the game the Lions hit 14 of 30 3-pointers overall. The Ichabods led by as many as 12 in the first half before the Lions used a run to take the halftime lead.
Bachelor led the Ichabods with 19 points adding four assists.
Brayden Shorter scored eight of his career-high 14 in the first half hitting four 3-pointers in nine attempts. Christiansen scored 10 adding five rebounds. Orr had a team-high boards with seven. The Ichabod bench outscored the Lions subs 41 to 27 in the game.
Winston Dessesow scored 19 off the bench to tie for game-high honors.
The Ichabods finished the game shooting 41 percent hitting 24 of 59 shots while hitting a total of seven 3-pointers in 32 attempts. The Ichabods outrebounded the Lions 36 to 33.   Â
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Feb. 24, 2024) TOPEKA, Kan. -- Four players scored in double figures for the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team in a balanced effort to give them a 68-49 win over Central Missouri on Saturday afternoon.
The Mules started the game on a 7-2 run in the first 3:30 of action but the next 10 points all came from the Ichabods, beginning with a layup for
Andrew Orr who had six of the first nine points for the home team. After the opening few minutes Washburn tightened its defense on Central Missouri, holding them to just 6-25 shooting (24 percent) in the first half.
After a 3-pointer fell through for the Mules at the 6:59 mark of the half which cut the lead to three, the Ichabods closed on a 13-2 run. In the final 11-0 burst before the half
Brayden Shorter and
Jack Bachelor combined to score eight of the 11 to lead 33-19 at the break.
Central Missouri came out of halftime firing, sinking back-to-back 3-pointers and cutting the lead to eight, but would score just two points in the next 5:30 of action. Bachelor and
Sam Ungashick each connected on a 3-pointer to spur a 10-0 run and push the lead up to 20 points at the 13:40 mark in the second half.
Inside of 10 minutes the Ichabods (17-9, 13-7 MIAA) went on a 13-2 run capped off by another three from Bachelor to make the lead a game-high 30 points with 4:41 left to play. The Mules scored down the stretch but it came too late and Washburn was able to settle into a 68-49 win.
Jarmell Johnson led the Ichabods with 14 points adding five rebounds in the win. Ungashick finished with 12 followed by Shorter with 11 and Bachelor with 10. Orr had nine points, nine rebounds and four blocks adding three assists.
Keith Kiner III led the Mules (11-15, 6-14 MIAA) with 14 points.
All ten active players logged minutes for the Ichabods who shot 25-57 (43.9 percent) in the game and made eight shots from behind the arc. On the other end of the court WU held Central Missouri to 19-59 (32.3 percent) shooting in the game including just 7 of 26 (27 percent) from 3-point range.
Washburn outscored the Mules 32 to 12 in the paint and 14 to 2 in fast break points while recording a 42-31 advantage on the glass. The Ichabods also had only six turnovers in the game.
