TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday night at Gahnstrom Field to No. 3-ranked Rogers State falling 7-1 and 2-0. Washburn returns to action on Saturday hosting Northeastern State at noon.
Game 1 – Rogers State 7, Washburn 1
In the opening game, the No. 3 Hillcats (20-4, 4-0 MIAA)scored two runs in the top of the second on a home run by Ashtyn Barrett, but the Ichabods (21-9, 2-4 MIAA) came back with a run in bottom of the inning when
Jaden LaBarge started the inning with a single to the hole behind shortstop and then came around to score from first on a double by
Alexis Tanguma to right center cutting the Hillcat lead in half.
The score remained the same until the sixth when the Hillcats took advantage of an Ichabod fielding error scoring four runs going up 6-1 and then added a solo run on a homer in the seventh leading to the 7-1 win.
The Ichabods had six hits in the game, one less than the Hillcats, but left eight runners stranded on the base paths in the game.
Jaycee Ginter had two of Washburn's six hits and took the loss in the circle striking out four pitching 6 1/3 innings in the game falling to 10-4. Sara Llamas-Howell improved to 10-2 for the Hillcats striking out seven.
Game 2 – Rogers State 2, Washburn 0
Rogers State scored a run in the top of the first as the Ichabods committed an error leading to an unearned run for the Hillcats as they took the 1-0 lead. The Hillcats added their final run in the fourth on a sac fly going up 2-0.
Jade Sanders threw her second no-hitter of the season as she forced the Ichabods into 10 ground outs and seven flyouts while striking out four and walking two improving to 8-2 on the season. It was the first time the Ichabods had been no hit since game one of a doubleheader against Central Oklahoma on April 12, 2014 in a 4-0 loss – a streak of 478 games.
Sadie Walker took the hard-fought loss in the circle for the Ichabods striking out three allowing one earned dropping to 11-5 on the season.
