CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Washburn scored three runs in the first inning and held that lead the rest of the way to win 12-4 over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday afternoon. The Ichabods return to MIAA action on Friday against Missouri Southern in Joplin at 6 p.m.
Payton McHarg and Cale Savage led off the game with singles and Cash Jay walked to load the bases. A groundout from Hayden Priest scored one run and Jett Buck doubled to clear the rest of the bases and make it 3-0 after the top of the first.
Charlie Kiefer got the start for Washburn (15-10) and sat down six of the seven Savage Storm he faced through the first two innings, holding them scoreless. Jay and Buck singled in the third inning and after Jay moved to third a double steal attempt resulted in him being able to nab home while Buck was thrown out. Southeastern Oklahoma State (9-17) matched the run in the bottom of the inning scoring one on an RBI groundout after the bases were loaded on a pair of walks and a single.
The Savage Storm led off the fourth with a solo home run. A single, sac bunt and wild pitch put a runner on third with one out and a grounder scored another run to pull them within a run. Sam Wragge replaced Kiefer on the mound in the fifth inning and held SEOSU scoreless in his first inning of work.
In the sixth Connor Scott reached on an error to lead off the inning and scored on a double by Cal Watkins to right center. Watkins was moved to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by McHarg to double up Southeastern Oklahoma.
Two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth. Kai Bennett came on the pitch and issued one walk, scoring one run, but got a strikeout to finish off the inning. Priest singled to lead off the seventh for Washburn and they would go on to score four runs with only the lone hit in the inning to lead 10-4.
Buck added to the Ichabod lead with an RBI groundout in the eighth, scoring Savage who led off with a single. Jay had walked and would score on a single by Watkins through the right side of the infield.
Over the final two innings Max Clark and Logan Bartlett combined to keep the Savage Storm off the board to finish off the game with a 12-4 win.
Washburn had 10 hits in the game with Savage, Buck and Watkins each knocking two. Buck drove in three runs while Watkins drove in a pair.
The Ichabod pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts and just six hits allowed, Kai Bennett got the win moving to 1-2 on the year.
