No. 3 Washburn hosts Cowley County in exhibition and No. 22 Augustana

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 3 Washburn women's tennis hosts Cowley County CC in an exhibition match on Tuesday at 1 p.m. indoors at the Genesis Tennis Center and faces No. 22 Augustana on Wednesday at 2 p.m. 

FIRST SERVE

  • No. 3 Washburn women's tennis stays at home for two more non-conference matches first against Cowley County CC on Tuesday, March 26 at 1 p.m. for an exhibition. They wrap up the homestand with No. 22 Augustana at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. 
  • The Ichabods are 9-2 on the year after a 7-0 sweep over William Jewell at home on March 19. 
  • The Tigers are 8-4 on the year while the Vikings enter the match with an 11-2 mark. 
  • The Ichabods moved up to No. 3 in the latest ITA rankings, the highest mark in program history. 
  • Washburn went 18-7 in 2022-23 with a 6-2 record in the MIAA during the regular season. They won the MIAA Championship Tournament and advanced to the NCAA National Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. 
  • The Ichabods return six players from last season's roster while adding three freshmen and one transfer to complete the roster. 

SINGLES SITUATION

  • Washburn has two players ranked on the singles side of the latest ITA rankings with Maja Jung remaining at No. 3 and Renske Ubachs re-entering at No. 62. 
  • For the season the Ichabods are 75-45 (62.5%) in singles matches and are 38-23 in duals. 
  • Maja Jung leads the team with an 15-5 record, she has a 8-2 record from No. 1. 
  • Renske Ubachs is 9-9 in singles competition and has gone 5-5 from No. 2.
  • Peyton Koper is 8-5 on the year and has gone 3-1 at No. 3. 
  • Martine Carroll is 8-4 in singles matches this season with a 2-0 record at No. 6. 
  • Isabella Martensson is 7-3 overall and has gone 4-0 when playing at No. 6. 
  • Maddie Shelley is 9-2 on the year, with a 3-1 record at No. 6. 
  • Issabella Pensavalle and Daphney Koutsofta have both gone 4-1 on the year. 

DOUBLES DOWNLOAD

  • The Ichabods have one doubles duo in the ITA Doubles rankings with Maja Jung and Lara Schmid remaining ranked No. 6. 
  • On the year the Ichabods have gone 49-17 (74.2%) on the year with a 25-6 record in duals. 
  • Jung and Schmid have the most wins together with an 15-5 record as a duo and they have gone 7-2 together at No. 1. 
  • Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs have a 12-2 record together and have gone 9-1 from No. 3. They have won their last six matches. 
  • Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson have gone 7-3 together overall this season at 6-3 from No. 2. 
  • Jung, Schmid and Ubachs all are tied for the team lead with 15 doubles victories this season, Shelley follows just behind with 14. 

LAST TIME OUT

Washburn 7, William Jewell 0 (March 19, 2024) 

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 6 Washburn women's tennis recorded its second straight sweep on Tuesday afternoon playing at home outside for the first time this season against William Jewell. The Ichabods are off for a week before hosting Cowley County CC at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26.  

Washburn (9-2) began doubles play on court three where Martine Carroll and Issabella Pensavalle teamed up for a 6-1 win. Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs followed with a 6-0 sweep at No. 2, clinching the doubles point for the Ichabods. Isabella Martensson and Peyton Koper completed a sweep of doubles play over the Cardinals (4-9) winning 6-3 at No. 1.  

No. 3 Maja Jung kicked off singles with a quick 6-0 win in her first set, followed by a 6-2 victory in the second set at No. 1. Koper followed closely behind winning 6-2 and 6-0 sets on court three to set up match point. Ubachs won 6-2 in her first set and quickly worked her way to a 6-1 win in the second to clinch the match at No. 2.  

In the second round of singles Shelley started it off at No. 6 winning without dropping a single set point to make it 4-0. Carroll won 6-2 in her first set and 6-3 in the second to continue the two-set victory trend at No. 4. Cadence Lynn closed out the match winning 6-3 and 6-2 sets at No. 5.  

HEAD COACH KIRBY RONNING

  • Ronning is in year four as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 115-46 combined record with Washburn.
  • Was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side after the 2022-23 season.   
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

THE ASSISTANTS

  • Graduate assistants Sofia Smagina and Casie Curry begin their first season on the Ichabod coaching staff while Kurt Reid and Miller Zeiders enter their fifth and second seasons respectively.  
  • Kurt Reid enters his fifth season as an assistant with the Ichabods. 
  • He started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • Reid, a Topeka-native, played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Zeiders enters his second season with Washburn and his first as a volunteer assistant after serving as a graduate assistant in 2022-23. 
  • Zeiders joins the Ichabods after a four-year career at Washburn from 2018-22 where he went 11-3 in singles and 9-6 in doubles. 
  • Former All-American Sofia Smagina joins the coaching staff after wrapping up one of the best seasons in Ichabod tennis history in 2022-23. 
  • Finished as the runner-up at the ITA Cup in singles and was named the MIAA Player of the Year while going 30-3 in singles and 26-5 in doubles in her one season at Washburn. Joined the Ichabods as a transfer from Kansas. 
  • Casie Curry rounds out the coaching staff as a graduate assistant after spending one season with Washburn in 2022-23. 
  • Curry received All-MIAA recognition in both singles and doubles while going 16-11 and 22-6 respectively. She joined the Ichabods after transferring from Midwestern State.

ABOUT THE COWLEY COUNTY TIGERS

  • Cowley County CC is 8-4 on the year and have won its last four matches after a 7-0 win over Nebraska-Kearney on March 16. 
  • The Tigers are 5-4 in road matches this season. 
  • Last season Cowley County went 11-4 overall and finished in second place at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis National Championships. 

TIGERS STAFF 

  • Arianna Raga is in her first season as the head coach of the Cowley County CC tennis programs.
  • spent the past three seasons at Cowley College as an assistant tennis coach to her brother, Manuel Raga
  • Before coaching, Raga-Simoes played No. 3 singles and doubles for the Lady Tiger tennis team during the 2012 season and went on to play three seasons at NCAA Division II Newman University
  • Assistant coach Brady Matthews rounds out the coaching staff 

HISTORY WITH COWLEY COUNTY CC

  • Washburn and Cowley County have played three official matches with the Ichabods winning all three. 
  • Tuesday's match will count as an exhibition for Washburn.

  • Augustana is 11-2 on the year after a 7-0 win over Minnesota State on March 24. They have won their last three matches. 
  • The Vikings have not played a true road match this season. 
  • Last season Augustana went 21-4 overall and 11-0 in the NSIC, advancing to the NCAA Central Regional where they lost to the Ichabods. 
  • They are slotted at No. 22 in the latest ITA rankings.

VIKINGS STAFF 

  • Marc Kurtz is in his 20th season as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs at Augustana. 
  • has compiled a 294-55 record on the women's side and a 102-167 on the men's side
  • Kurtz is the tennis director at GreatLife Fitness Center in Sioux Falls, where he is a certified tennis professional with the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA)
  • earned four letters competing in tennis in the top three single positions and top two doubles for Montana State University-Billings.
  • Assistant coach Jared Hofer and volunteer assistant Mitch Barr complete the coaching staff

HISTORY WITH AUGUSTANA

  • Washburn and Augustana have faced off seven times all-time with the Ichabods leading the series 5-2. 
  • The first match was on April 5, 2014 in Topeka and was a 7-2 win for the Vikings. 
  • Washburn is 2-2 against Augustana in Topeka. 
  • Last season the Ichabods won both matches against the Vikings 4-2, one coming at home and one in Sioux Falls. 


MILESTONE MARKERS

  • Maja Jung is three doubles victories away from reaching 70 with Washburn. 
  • Isabella Martensson is one win in singles away from reaching 30 as an Ichabod and six doubles from totaling 50. 
  • Lara Schmid needs 10 doubles victories to reach 50 at Washburn. 

SCHEDULE SPRING FORWARD 

  • The Ichabods begin MIAA play on March 30 against Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo.
