No. 9 Ichabod women face No. 27 Bearcats on the road Saturday to open MIAA play

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 9 Washburn women's tennis will play a second straight ranked match as they head to Maryville to face No. 27 Northwest Missouri State in the conference-opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday. 
 

FIRST SERVE

  • No. 9 Washburn women's tennis beings MIAA play on Saturday on the road against No. 27 Northwest Missouri State at 1 p.m. 
  • The Ichabods are 10-2 on the year after a 5-1 win at home over No. 23 Augustana on Wednesday afternoon. 
  • The Bearcats are 13-1 on the year after picking up a 4-3 win over No. 22 Cameron on Tuesday. They will face Rockhurst on Friday before taking on Washburn. 
  • The Ichabods moved to No. 9 in the latest ITA rankings after not playing a match for a week. 
  • Washburn went 18-7 in 2022-23 with a 6-2 record in the MIAA during the regular season. They won the MIAA Championship Tournament and advanced to the NCAA National Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. 
  • The Ichabods return six players from last season's roster while adding three freshmen and one transfer to complete the roster. 

SINGLES SITUATION

  • Washburn has two players ranked on the singles side of the latest ITA rankings with Maja Jung remaining at No. 3 and Lara Schmid entering the rankings for the first time at No. 74. 
  • For the season the Ichabods are 79-46 (63.2%) in singles matches and are 42-24 in duals. 
  • Maja Jung leads the team with an 16-5 record, she has a 9-2 record from No. 1. 
  • Renske Ubachs is 10-9 in singles competition and has gone 5-5 from No. 2.
  • Peyton Koper is 9-5 on the year and has gone 3-1 at No. 3. She has won her last four matches. 
  • Martine Carroll is 8-5 in singles matches this season with a 2-1 record at No. 6. 
  • Isabella Martensson is 8-3 overall and has gone 4-0 when playing at No. 6.  She is on a four match winning streak. 
  • Maddie Shelley is 9-2 on the year, with a 3-1 record at No. 6. 
  • Issabella Pensavalle and Daphney Koutsofta have both gone 4-1 on the year. 

DOUBLES DOWNLOAD

  • The Ichabods have one doubles duo in the ITA Doubles rankings with Maja Jung and Lara Schmid remaining ranked No. 7. 
  • On the year the Ichabods have gone 51-17 (75.0%) on the year with a 27-6 record in duals. 
  • Jung and Schmid have the most wins together with an 15-5 record as a duo and they have gone 7-2 together at No. 1. 
  • Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs have a 13-2 record together and have gone 10-1 from No. 3. They have won their last seven matches. 
  • Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson have gone 8-3 together overall this season at 7-3 from No. 2. 
  • Ubachs has a team-high 16 doubles victories this season with Jung, Schmid and Shelley all just behind at 15. 

LAST TIME OUT

Washburn 5, Augustana 1 (March 27, 2024) 

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 9 Washburn secured its fourth ranked win of the season Wednesday afternoon taking a 5-1 victory over No. 23 Augustana. The Ichabods kick off MIAA play on Saturday taking on Northwest Missouri State on the road.  

Doubles action moved quickly for Washburn (10-2) beginning on court three with Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs taking a 6-1 win. Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson were not far behind, winning 6-2 at No. 2 to take the doubles point over the Vikings (11-3). No. 7 Lara Schmid and Maja Jung were tied 3-3 at No. 1 when the point was decided.  

Augustana evened the match up to begin singles play as Martine Carroll took a two-set loss at No. 6, 6-3 and 6-2. Ubachs won her opening set from No. 2=3 6-3 and rolled to a 6-0 win in the second set to re-gain the advantage for the Ichabods. At No. 2, Koper fell 6-4 in the first set to No. 34 Senem Ocal but battled back to win 6-2 in the second and 6-4 in the third. 

On the top court No. 3 Jung won 6-2 in the first set over No. 11 Florentia Hadjigeorgiou. She took the second set to an extra point but fell, 7-5. In the third she pulled away for a 6-1 win to clinch the match. Martensson added an extra point taking a three-set win at No. 5 by set scores of 6-2, 1-6 and 6-4, finishing just after Jung. No. 74 Schmid fell 6-1 in her first set but won 6-2 in the second and led 4-3 in the third at No. 4 with the dual left unfinished.  

HEAD COACH KIRBY RONNING

  • Ronning is in year four as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 117-46 combined record with Washburn.
  • Was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side after the 2022-23 season.   
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

THE ASSISTANTS

  • Graduate assistants Sofia Smagina and Casie Curry begin their first season on the Ichabod coaching staff while Kurt Reid and Miller Zeiders enter their fifth and second seasons respectively.  
  • Kurt Reid enters his fifth season as an assistant with the Ichabods. 
  • He started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • Reid, a Topeka-native, played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Zeiders enters his second season with Washburn and his first as a volunteer assistant after serving as a graduate assistant in 2022-23. 
  • Zeiders joins the Ichabods after a four-year career at Washburn from 2018-22 where he went 11-3 in singles and 9-6 in doubles. 
  • Former All-American Sofia Smagina joins the coaching staff after wrapping up one of the best seasons in Ichabod tennis history in 2022-23. 
  • Finished as the runner-up at the ITA Cup in singles and was named the MIAA Player of the Year while going 30-3 in singles and 26-5 in doubles in her one season at Washburn. Joined the Ichabods as a transfer from Kansas. 
  • Casie Curry rounds out the coaching staff as a graduate assistant after spending one season with Washburn in 2022-23. 
  • Curry received All-MIAA recognition in both singles and doubles while going 16-11 and 22-6 respectively. She joined the Ichabods after transferring from Midwestern State.

ABOUT THE NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS

  • Northwest Missouri State is 13-1 on the year after a 4-3 win over No. 22 Cameron on Tuesday, March 19. They will face Rockhurst on Friday before taking on the Ichabods. 
  • The Bearcats are 5-0 at the Frank Grube Courts this season. 
  • Last year Northwest Missouri went 18-5 overall and 8-0 inside the MIAA. They lost in the first round of the MIAA Tournament and in the second round of the NCAA Central Region Tournament. 
  • NWMSU is ranked No. 27 in the latest ITA rankings. 
  • On the singles side two Bearcats are ranked with Tessa Kwakernaak at No. 64 and Laura Prieto Sieiro at No. 75. 
  • Northwest Missouri is 69-36 in singles matches this season (65.7%) and 49-19 in duals. 
  • Laura Prieto Sieiro is 13-1 on the year, tying the team-lead in wins, and is 11-0 from No. 5. She has won her last 13 matches.  
  • Marielena Muench is 13-5 on the year overall and is 10-3 from the No. 4 spot. 
  • In doubles the Bearcats have gone 35-14 (71.4%) on the year with a 27-9 record in duals. 
  • Prieto Sieiro and Muench are 12-2 together this season and 10-2 from No. 3. 
  • Tessa Kwakernaak and Angela per Moreno are 11-3 this season with a 10-2 mark at No. 2. 

BEARCATS STAFF 

  • Mark Rosewell is in his 40th season as the head coach of the Northwest Missouri State men's and women's tennis programs. 
  • Has 1,204 victories at Northwest, most of any coach at Northwest, and 29 MIAA Regular Season Championships and 10 MIAA Tournament Championships with 41 NCAA Tournament Appeareances.
  • Roswell served as head tennis coach for both the Mules and Jennies of Central Missouri while working on his master's degree. He was 22-27 at UCM as head coach in two seasons
  • Graduate assistant Takalani Molaoa rounds out the coaching staff 

HISTORY WITH NORTHWEST MISSOURI

  • Saturday will be the 46th match between Washburn and Northwest Missouri State with the Bearcats leading the all-time series 25-20. 
  • The Ichabods are 11-4 against Northwest Missouri on the road. 
  • The series between the two began on April 23, 1991 with a 5-4 win for Washburn in Maryville. 
  • Last season the Bearcats took the only match between the two teams, 4-3 in Topeka. 


MILESTONE MARKERS

  • Maja Jung is three doubles victories away from reaching 70 with Washburn. 
  • Isabella Martensson is six doubles from totaling 50 with the Ichabods. 
  • Lara Schmid needs 10 doubles victories to reach 50 at Washburn. 

SCHEDULE SPRING FORWARD 

  • The Ichabods stay inside the MIAA heading to Emporia to take on the Hornets on Wednesday, April 3, at 2 p.m.
  • Senior day for Washburn will take place on April 27 against Fort Hays State. 
  • The women's MIAA Tournament will take place in Edmond, Okla. from May 3 to May 5.
