TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 13 Washburn men's tennis heads to Wichita Falls, Texas where they will take on Cameron, Midwestern State and UT Tyler over the weekend.
FIRST SERVE
- No. 13 Washburn men's tennis heads to the Lone Star State for three matches beginning Friday at 9 a.m. against Cameron.
- The road trip continues against No. 18 Midwestern State in Wichita Falls at 2 p.m. on Saturday. They finish up against No. 9 Texas at Tyler at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
- The Ichabods are 4-3 on the year after a 5-2 loss to No. 2 Saint Leo on Feb. 29.
- The Aggies enter the match with a 1-2 record after losing 4-2 to West Alamba on March 3.
- MSU is 4-2 on the year coming off a 4-0 loss to No. 7 West Florida on March 3.
- UT Tyler is 6-2 on the year but are coming off a 4-1 loss to No. 19 Auburn Montgomery on March 3.
- The Ichabods are ranked No. 13 in the lates ITA rankings.
- Washburn went 17-8 in 2022-23 with a 3-1 record in the MIAA during the regular season. They won the MIAA Championship Tournament and advanced to the NCAA National Championships.
- The Ichabods return eight players from last season's roster while adding four freshmen and one transfer to complete the roster.

- Washburn has five players ranked in the latest ITA singles rankings with Sebastian Pjontek at No. 4, Tim Hammes checking in at No. 15, Santiago Rendon ranked 22, Pavlos Parson at No. 60 and Tommy Cecchetti entering at No. 69.
- For the season the Ichabods are 79-40 (64.4%) in singles matches and are 24-16 in duals.
- Rendon leads the team with 12 wins and has a 12-4 overall record this season. he is 4-1 at No. 3.
- Pjontek has an 10-5 record on the year with an 1-1 record from No. 2.
- Tim Hammes is 8-3 overall with a 2-1 record after moving to No. 1.
- Tommy Cecchetti has gone 3-0 from the No. 5 spot and is 10-4 overall.

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The No. 13 Ichabods led early over No. 2 Saint Leo but eventually fell on the road 5-2. Washburn will head to Wichita Falls, Texas next, taking on Cameron University on March 8.
The Lions (8-1) started doubles action off taking the early advantage with Matthew Earle and Daniel Bird falling 6-1 from No. 2 to No. 7 Nicolas Bacella and Ghali Mensour. Tim Hammes and Sebastian Pjontek evened the match up winning 6-4 at No. 1. Santiago Rendon and Pavlos Parson rallied from an early deficit to force a tiebreaker, winning 7-6 to put Washburn (4-3) up.
No. 11 Rendon continued to roll in singles play, winning his opening set 6-4 and finishing off the second 6-1 from No. 3. Saint Leo got on the board as No. 36 Vincent Thiel won 6-2 and 6-3 over No. 10 Pjontek playing from No. 2. The Lions evened the match up with Tommy Cecchetti falling 6-4 and 6-3 sets from No. 4.
Playing on the top court Hammes won his opening set 7-5 over No. 18 Martin Soukal but fell 6-3 in the second and 6-1 in the third to set up match point for the home team. Saint Leo was able to capture the fourth point with Earle falling 6-1, 6-2 from No. 5. No. 30 Parson also fell 6-2 in both sets playing from No. 6 6-2.
HEAD COACH KIRBY RONNING
- Ronning is in year four as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn
- Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 106-45 combined record with Washburn.
- Was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side after the 2022-23 season.
- Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
- As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.
THE ASSISTANTS
- Graduate assistants Sofia Smagina and Casie Curry begin their first season on the Ichabod coaching staff while Kurt Reid and Raul-Alin Dicu enter their fifth and second seasons respectively.
- Kurt Reid enters his fifth season as an assistant with the Ichabods.
- He started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
- Reid, a Topeka-native, played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
- Dicu enters his second season with Washburn and his first as a volunteer assistant after serving as a graduate assistant in 2022-23.
- Dicu finished his five-year career with Washburn in 2022 with a 56-45 singles record and 53-41 doubles mark. He is in the top-20 in singles and doubles wins in program history
- Former All-American Sofia Smagina joins the coaching staff after wrapping up one of the best seasons in Ichabod tennis history in 2022-23.
- Finished as the runner-up at the ITA Cup in singles and was named the MIAA Player of the Year while going 30-3 in singles and 26-5 in doubles in her one season at Washburn. Joined the Ichabods as a transfer from Kansas.
- Casie Curry rounds out the coaching staff as a graduate assistant after spending one season with Washburn in 2022-23.
- Curry received All-MIAA recognition in both singles and doubles while going 16-11 and 22-6 respectively. She joined the Ichabods after transferring from Midwestern State.
