No. 5 Ichabods head to Texas for matches against Aggies, Mustangs and Patriots

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 5 Ichabod women's tennis heads to the Lone Star State for a trio of matches this weekend against Cameron, Midwestern State and UT Tyler. 


FIRST SERVE

  • No. 5 Washburn women's tennis plays three matches in three days beginning on Friday against No. 18 Cameron at 9 a.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas. 
  • They continue the week on Saturday at 2 p.m. against No. 13 Midwestern State University and wrap it up at 9 a.m. on Sunday against the University of Texas at Tyler. 
  • The Ichabods are 6-1 on the year after a 4-3 loss on Feb. 29 to No. 4 Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Fla. 
  • The Aggies are 3-2 going into the weekend after winning 4-2 over West Alabama on March 3. 
  • UT Tyler enters the match with a 1-7 record 
  • The Mustangs will enter the match with a 3-2 record after falling 4-2 to West Florida on March 3. 
  • The Ichabods are ranked No. 5 in the latest ITA rankings. 
  • Washburn went 18-7 in 2022-23 with a 6-2 record in the MIAA during the regular season. They won the MIAA Championship Tournament and advanced to the NCAA National Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. 
  • The Ichabods return six players from last season's roster while adding three freshmen and one transfer to complete the roster. 

SINGLES SITUATION

  • Washburn has three players in the latest ITA rankings with Maja Jung at No. 3 in the nation and Renske Ubachs and Payton Koper entering the rankings at No. 48 and No. 73 respectively. 
  • For the season the Ichabods are 61-38 (61.6%) in singles matches and are 24-16 in duals. 
  • Maja Jung leads the team with an 14-3 record, she has a 7-0 record from No. 1. 
  • Renske Ubachs is 7-7 in singles competition and has gone 3-3 from No. 2.
  • Maddie Shelley is 8-2 on the year, with a 2-1 record at No. 6. 
  • Peyton Koper is 5-5 on the year and has gone 2-4 at No. 4. 
  • Martine Carroll is 7-4 in singles matches this season with a 2-0 record at No. 6. 
  • Isabella Martensson is 4-3 overall with a 2-0 record at No. 6. 
  • Issabella Pensavalle and Daphney Koutsofta have both gone 4-1 on the year. 

DOUBLES DOWNLOAD

  • The Ichabods have one doubles duo in the ITA Doubles rankings with Maja Jung and Lara Schmid ranked No. 5. 
  • On the year the Ichabods have gone 40-16 (71.4%) on the year with a 16-5 record in duals. 
  • Jung and Schmid have the most wins together with an 13-5 record as a duo and they have gone 5-2 together at No. 1. 
  • Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs have a 8-2 record together and have gone 6-1 from No. 3. 
  • Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson have gone 5-2 together at No. 2 this season. 
  • Jung and Schmid both lead the team with 13 overall wins in doubles this season. 
  • Ubachs is third with 11 victories overall while Koper and Shelley both have 10. 

LAST TIME OUT

Saint Leo 4, Washburn 3 (Feb. 29, 2024) 

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- No. 5 Washburn took an early lead over No. 4 Saint Leo but were unable to control it throughout singles play, falling 4-3 in the final leg of its trip to Florida. The Ichabods are in action next on March 8 against Cameron University in Wichita Falls, Texas. 

The Lions (6-2) took an early advantage in doubles with No. 8 Maja Jung and Lara Schmid falling 6-1 from No. 1. Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson evened doubles up winning 6-4 from No. 2. After trailing early Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs rallied to take the doubles point for Washburn (6-1) with a 6-4 win on court three.  

The Ichabod lead grew to 2-0 after No. 3 Jung delivered a 6-3 win in her opening set followed by a swift 6-1 win in set two from No. 1. Saint Leo got on the board with Koper falling 6-5 and 7-5 from No. 4. The Lions knotted the match up as Schmid dropping 6-1 and 6-3 sets from No. 3.  

Ubachs forced an extra point in her first set at No. 2 but came up short 7-5. In the second set she came back from an early lead to tie the set at six but lost in the tiebreaker and Saint Leo had match point. At No. 5 Martensson lost 6-0 in the first and 6-1 in the second set and the Lions secured their fourth point. Martine Carroll played out her match at No. 6, winning 6-4 in the first set and rolling to a 6-2 win in the second set to make it a 4-3 final.  

HEAD COACH KIRBY RONNING

  • Ronning is in year four as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 106-45 combined record with Washburn.
  • Was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side after the 2022-23 season.   
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

THE ASSISTANTS

  • Graduate assistants Sofia Smagina and Casie Curry begin their first season on the Ichabod coaching staff while Kurt Reid and Miller Zeiders enter their fifth and second seasons respectively.  
  • Kurt Reid enters his fifth season as an assistant with the Ichabods. 
  • He started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • Reid, a Topeka-native, played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Zeiders enters his second season with Washburn and his first as a volunteer assistant after serving as a graduate assistant in 2022-23. 
  • Zeiders joins the Ichabods after a four-year career at Washburn from 2018-22 where he went 11-3 in singles and 9-6 in doubles. 
  • Former All-American Sofia Smagina joins the coaching staff after wrapping up one of the best seasons in Ichabod tennis history in 2022-23. 
  • Finished as the runner-up at the ITA Cup in singles and was named the MIAA Player of the Year while going 30-3 in singles and 26-5 in doubles in her one season at Washburn. Joined the Ichabods as a transfer from Kansas. 
  • Casie Curry rounds out the coaching staff as a graduate assistant after spending one season with Washburn in 2022-23. 
  • Curry received All-MIAA recognition in both singles and doubles while going 16-11 and 22-6 respectively. She joined the Ichabods after transferring from Midwestern State.

ABOUT THE CAMERON AGGIES

  • Cameron is 3-2 on the year after a 4-2 win over the University of West Alabama on March 3.  
  • They are ranked No. 18 in the latest ITA rankings this season. 
  • The Aggies are 2-1 in neutral court matches on the year. 
  • Last season Cameron went 17-4 overall and 9-1 inside the Lone Star Conference. 
  • The Aggies have two players ranked in the latest ITA doubles rankings this season. Vasilisa Polunova and Magda Wawrowska ranked No. 34 with a 2-1 record and Jenna Goessel and Vasilisa Polunova at No. 47 going 3-2 this season. 

AGGIES STAFF 

  • Josh Cobble is in his 8th season as the head coach at Cameron. 
  • spent seven years as the head coach at Cowley College where he led the Tigers men's and women's tennis teams to region titles in 2011 and 2012
  • Assistant coach Karolina Glowinska rounds out the coaching staff 

HISTORY WITH CAMERON

  • Washburn and Cameron have faced off 13 times with the Aggies leading the series 10-3.
  • The last match between the two came on Feb. 8, 2020 and was a 4-3 neutral court win for Washburn.

  • Scott Linn is in his 14th season leading both the men's and women's tennis programs at MSU.

  • A 1995 graduate of East Central, Linn played four years and was a captain for the Tigers

  • Washburn and Midwestern State have faced off 13 times with the Mustangs leading the all-time series 10-3.
  • The Ichabods are 0-5 against MSU in Wichita Falls. 
  • The last match between the two teams came on March 5, 2022 and was a 4-3 win for the Mustangs at home.

  • Sunday's match will be the first between Washburn and UT Tyler. 


MILESTONE MARKERS

  • Maja Jung is five doubles victories away from reaching 70 and one singles win from reaching 75 in her career. 
  • Isabella Martensson is four wins in singles away from reaching 30 as an Ichabod
  • Lara Schmid needs one more singles victory to reach 20 at Washburn and two doubles wins for 40.

SCHEDULE SPRING FORWARD 

  • Washburn returns home to face William Jewell College on Tuesday, March 19 at 1 p.m.

  • Senior day for Washburn will take place on April 27 against Fort Hays State. 
  • The women's MIAA Tournament will take place in Edmond, Okla. from May 3 to May 5.
