No. 9 Ichabods head to Emporia State and Newman for midweek matches

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 9 Washburn women's tennis continues its tour through the MIAA with a pair of midweek matches against Emporia State and Newman on Wednesday and Thursday respectively with both matches getting underway at 2 p.m. 

FIRST SERVE

  • No. 9 Washburn women's tennis continues conference action with back-to-back matches first against Emporia State on Wednesday followed by a duel with Newman on Thursday, both at 2 p.m. 
  • The Ichabods are 10-3 on the year and 0-1 in the MIAA after a 5-2 road loss to No. 27 Northwest Missouri State on March 30. 
  • The Hornets are 4-6 overall on the year and 1-1 in the MIAA coming off a 6-1 win over Fort Hays State on March 30.
  • The Jets have an 11-7 record on the year with a 1-1 mark inside the MIAA. They last claimed a 4-3 win over Fort Hays State on March 29.
  • The Ichabods moved to No. 9 in the latest ITA rankings after not playing a match for a week. 
  • Washburn went 18-7 in 2022-23 with a 6-2 record in the MIAA during the regular season. They won the MIAA Championship Tournament and advanced to the NCAA National Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. 
  • The Ichabods return six players from last season's roster while adding three freshmen and one transfer to complete the roster. 

SINGLES SITUATION

  • Washburn has two players ranked on the singles side of the latest ITA rankings with Maja Jung remaining at No. 3 and Lara Schmid entering the rankings for the first time at No. 74. 
  • For the season the Ichabods are 81-50 (61.8%) in singles matches and are 44-28 in duals. 
  • Maja Jung leads the team with an 17-5 record, she has a 10-2 record from No. 1. 
  • Renske Ubachs is 11-9 in singles competition and has gone 6-5 from No. 2. She has won her last four matches. 
  • Peyton Koper is 9-6 on the year playing between two and four and has gone 3-1 at No. 4. 
  • Isabella Martensson is 8-4 overall and has gone 4-0 when playing at No. 6.  
  • Martine Carroll is 8-6 in singles matches this season with a 2-2 record at No. 6. 
  • Maddie Shelley is 9-2 on the year, with a 3-1 record at No. 6. 
  • Issabella Pensavalle and Daphney Koutsofta have both gone 4-1 on the year. 

DOUBLES DOWNLOAD

  • The Ichabods have one doubles duo in the ITA Doubles rankings with Maja Jung and Lara Schmid remaining ranked No. 7. 
  • On the year the Ichabods have gone 51-20 (71.8%) on the year with a 27-9 record in duals. 
  • Jung and Schmid have the most wins together with an 15-6 record as a duo and they have gone 7-3 together at No. 1. 
  • Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs have a 13-3 record together and have gone 10-2 from No. 3. 
  • Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson have gone 8-4 together overall this season at 7-4 from No. 2. 
  • Ubachs has a team-high 16 doubles victories this season with Jung, Schmid and Shelley all just behind at 15. 

LAST TIME OUT

Northwest Missouri 5, Washburn 2 (March 30, 2024) 

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- No. 9 Washburn women's tennis began conference play with a 5-2 loss on the road against No. 27 Northwest Missouri State on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods stay in the MIAA taking on Emporia State in Emporia on Wednesday, April 3.  

The host Bearcats (15-1) claimed a quick advantage in doubles action as Maddie Shelly and Renske Ubachs fell 6-3 from No. 3 to open the match. Northwest Missouri took the first point with Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson dropping a 6-2 duel on court two. No. 7 Lara Schmid and Maja Jung were not far behind from No. 1, but also fell, losing 7-4 in the tiebreaker.  

No. 3 Jung was quick to gain redemption, winning 6-2 and 6-4 sets from No. 1 to tie the match for Washburn (10-3, 0-1 MIAA). Koper won 6-2 in her first set from No. 3 but fell 6-3 and 6-0 in each of the ensuing sets and NWMSU took the lead once again. At No. 2, Ubachs won 6-4 in the opening set and led 6-5 in the second when her opponent, No. 64 Tessa Kwakernaak, retired, giving her the win and tying the match.  

The Bearcats set up match point as Martensson dropped 6-3 and 6-4 sets from No. 4. Martine Carroll also fell in two sets, losing 6-2 and 6-3 at No. 6 as Northwest Missouri secured the match. No. 74 Schmid lost a pair of 6-3 sets to No. 75 Laura Prieto Sieiro to finish out the match.  

HEAD COACH KIRBY RONNING

  • Ronning is in year four as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 118-47 combined record with Washburn.
  • Was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side after the 2022-23 season.   
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

THE ASSISTANTS

  • Graduate assistants Sofia Smagina and Casie Curry begin their first season on the Ichabod coaching staff while Kurt Reid and Miller Zeiders enter their fifth and second seasons respectively.  
  • Kurt Reid enters his fifth season as an assistant with the Ichabods. 
  • He started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • Reid, a Topeka-native, played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Zeiders enters his second season with Washburn and his first as a volunteer assistant after serving as a graduate assistant in 2022-23. 
  • Zeiders joins the Ichabods after a four-year career at Washburn from 2018-22 where he went 11-3 in singles and 9-6 in doubles. 
  • Former All-American Sofia Smagina joins the coaching staff after wrapping up one of the best seasons in Ichabod tennis history in 2022-23. 
  • Finished as the runner-up at the ITA Cup in singles and was named the MIAA Player of the Year while going 30-3 in singles and 26-5 in doubles in her one season at Washburn. Joined the Ichabods as a transfer from Kansas. 
  • Casie Curry rounds out the coaching staff as a graduate assistant after spending one season with Washburn in 2022-23. 
  • Curry received All-MIAA recognition in both singles and doubles while going 16-11 and 22-6 respectively. She joined the Ichabods after transferring from Midwestern State.

ABOUT THE EMPORIA STATE HORNETS

  • Emporia State is 4-6 on the year and 1-1 in the MIAA coming off a 6-1 win over Fort Hays State on March 30. 
  • The Hornets have not played a match at Milton Courts this season. 
  • Last season Emporia State went 5-13 overall and 1-7 in the MIAA and did not qualify for the MIAA Tournament. 
  • The Hornets have gone 26-32 in singles play this season (44.8%). 
  • Lilie Bizouerne and Giovanna Ferreira both have five wins this season to lead the squad in victories. 
  • Anastasia Pesic is 4-2 this year with a 3-2 record at No. 5. 
  • In doubles action Emporia State is 14-15 (48.3%) on the year. Peria Conde and Sheriden Wichman are 7-2 together this season with a 6-2 mark from No. 3. 

HORNETS STAFF 

  • Cyrielle Peyroche is in her first full season as the head coach of the Emporia State tennis programs. 
  • she was elevated from a graduate assistant position to the interm head coach last spring. 
  • Peyroche was 23-15 in singles play during her three years as a Hornet before moving into the graduate assistant position during the 2021-22 season
  • Graduate assistant Phatsimo Ruele rounds out the coaching staff 

HISTORY WITH EMPORIA STATE

  • Wednesday will be the 60th match between Washburn and Emporia State with the Ichabods leading the all-time series 38-21.
  • The series began on October 2, 1975 with a 5-4 win for the Hornets in Topeka. 
  • Washburn is 16-7 against Emporia State in Emporia. 
  • Last season the Ichabods took a 7-0 win over ESU in Topeka.

  • Newman is 11-7 on the year and 1-1 in the MIAA after a 4-3 road win over Fort Hays State on March 29. 
  • The Jets are a perfect 5-0 when playing at Riverside Tennis Courts this season. 
  • Last season Newman went 9-9 overall and 2-6 inside the MIAA, missing out on the MIAA Tournament. 

JETS STAFF 

  • Shella Augspurger is entering her 20th year with the Newman tennis program.
  • she took over as Director of Tennis prior to the 2007-08 season.
  • Augspurger has been teaching tennis for over 20 years, beginning at multiple clubs in the St. Louis, Missouri area, when she also achieved her U.S. Professional Tennis Association teaching certification
  • graduated and played three sports at Kentucky
  • Graduate assistant Romina Cutipa completes the coaching staff 

HISTORY WITH NEWMAN

  • Thursday will be the 13th meeting between Washburn and Newman all-time with the Ichabods leading the series 10-2. 
  • The first match was on April 21, 2008 and was a 9-0 win for the Ichabods in Topeka. 
  • Washburn is 2-2 against the Jets in Wichita. 
  • Last season the Ichabods won a 6-1 match against Newman in Topeka. 


MILESTONE MARKERS

  • Maja Jung is three doubles victories away from reaching 70 with Washburn. 
  • Isabella Martensson is six doubles victories from totaling 50 with the Ichabods. 
  • Lara Schmid needs 10 doubles victories to reach 50 at Washburn. 

SCHEDULE SPRING FORWARD 

  • The Ichabods are off for over a week before they take on Central Oklahoma at home on Friday, April 12 with a 2 p.m. first serve. 
  • Senior day for Washburn will take place on April 27 against Fort Hays State. 
  • The women's MIAA Tournament will take place in Edmond, Okla. from May 3 to May 5.
