AUSTIN, Tex. -- Payton McHarg was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-American second team as an outfielder Thursday morning. The junior is the third ever NCBWA All-American selection and is the first ever to land on either the first or second team.
McHarg is the first All-American for Washburn baseball since David Gauntt was a third team NCBWA selection in 2016. Only two Ichabods before McHarg were selected as NCBWA All-Americans.
Payton McHarg is a second team selection as an outfielder in his first season at Washburn after turning in one of the most productive seasons at the plate in program history. The junior blasted a team-high 21 home runs on 73 total hits with 67 RBI while hitting .354 on the year and reaching base at a .473 clip. His 21 home runs are third most in a season in program history with 67 RBI ranking as the fourth highest total.
Around the nation he ranks 6th in home runs, 12th in total bases, 23rd in RBI and 32nd in SLG% during the regular season and conference tournament schedule. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada native played and started in all 53 games this season. On February 8 against Union he became the fourth player in program history to hit three home runs in a game.
McHarg is the 5th individual Ichabod to be named an All-American in Washburn's NCAA history. Others include Chad Rodriguez (Rawlings/ABCA, 1996 Second Team), Pat Colley (Rawlings/ABCA, 2000 Third Team) and John Calhoun (Rawlings/ABCA, NCBWA and Daktronics, 2012 Third Team), David Gauntt (NCBWA, 2016 Second Team).
