YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team opened the 2025 season going 1-1 on day one of the Mardi Gras Invitational. The Ichabods will be back in action on Saturday with two more games.
Game 1 – WU 1, Texas A&M-Kingsville 0
Sadie Walker pitched a complete-game shutout in her season debut while striking out nine and
Mariah Wheeler's RBI single was the difference in the season-opening win.
Wheeler's single in the third inning scored
Erin Boles who doubled to center field and then scored on Wheeler's single putting Washburn up 1-0.
Walker (1-0) scattered nine hits in the game and walked two in her first win of the season.
Wheeler and Boles each had two hits for the Ichabods.
Game 2 – Alabama-Huntsville 8, WU 4
The Ichabods fell behind 3-0 after two innings but put up their first run of the game on a lead-off home run by
Kate Ediger for Washburn's first home run of the season.
Neither team scored until the Ichabods took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. All of Washburn's runs came with two outs and
Ellington Hogle singled and
Kaylee Wagner doubled scoring Hogle and Boles who reached after being hit by a pitch.
Gracie Gallagher scored as a pinch-runner for Wagner.
The Chargers (1-1) came back with five runs in the top of the seventh taking an 8-4 lead and Washburn left a runner on after Boles walked with two outs.
Ava Bloyd tossed six innings striking out two.
