YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team picked up a pair of wins on day two of the Mardi Gras Invitational with a run-rule victory and a triple play to take down the No. 12-ranked team in the country. The Ichabods will wrap up the three-day event facing Southern Arkansas at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Game 1 – Washburn 9, Miles 0
The Ichabods scored all nine runs in the first two innings cruising to a 9-0 win over the Golden Bears.
Washburn scored three runs in its first at-bat when
Erin Boles led off the inning with a single and after a single by
Makenzie Sais,
Ellington Hogle doubled scoring both Ichabods. Hogle would come around to score on a passed ball as the Ichabods led 3-0 after the first inning.
In the second, Washburn (3-1) scored six times in the frame.
Kate Ediger walked to start the inning and
Maddie McGee doubled scoring Ediger.
Kaylee Wagner then singled driving in Boles and McGee and then Hogle singled driving in Sais.
Alexis Tanguma doubled scoring Hogle and Wagner as Washburn took a 9-0 lead.
Washburn's
Ava Bloyd picked up the win by throwing three innings, and
Jenna Sprague pitched the final two. Hogle had two hits to lead the Ichabods while driving in a team-high three runs.
Game 2 – WU 10, #12 Mississippi College 7
A triple play with the bases loaded secured the 10-7 win over the No. 12-ranked Choctaws.
Washburn scored two in the top of the first when Wagner's triple scored Sais and then Hogle singled scoring Wagner putting Washburn up 2-0.
The Choctaws scored a run in the bottom of the second, but the Ichabods came back with two of their own in the top of the third on a double by
Mariah Wheeler that scored
Jaden LaBarge and Hogle.
Washburn padded its lead with a solo run in the fourth when McGee scored on an error by MC on a single from Boles.
The Choctaws scored one in the bottom of the fifth, but again the Ichabods came back with four of their own on Sais' single that drove in one and then Wagner drove in another run with a single. Hogle then was hit by a pitch for an RBI and Tanguma singled, driving in another Ichabod run.
MC came back with five runs of its own in the sixth trimming Washburn's lead to 9-7.
In the seventh, Boles homered as Washburn went up 10-7. In the bottom of the frame, the Choctaws loaded the bases, but Boles collected a fly ball starting a triple play ending the game.
Washburn pounded out 15 hits with Boles and Wagner each collecting three. Wagner, Hogle and Wheeler each drove in two.
Sadie Walker picked up the win striking out seven scattering 11 hits.
