Washburn women's tennis wraps up fall season at Washburn Invitational

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Ichabod women's tennis puts the finish touches on the fall season beginning Sunday at the Washburn Invitational at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka, Kan. 


First Serve

  • Washburn women's tennis wraps up the fall season at the Washburn Invitational this weekend. 
  • Tournament play will begin the morning of Sunday, Oct. 26 due to rain on Saturday. It will be a one-day tournament. 
  • Last season the Ichabods made another appearance in the NCAA Tournament going 17-4 overall and 8-1 in the MIAA to share the MIAA Regular Season Championship. 
  • Washburn's 2025-26 roster features eight players with two seniors, one junior, three sophomores and a pair of freshmen. 

Washburn Invitational 2 

  • The Washburn Invitational will feature players from Emporia State, Cowley County Community College, Newman and Rockhurst and Missouri Western on the women's side. 
  • All eight Ichabods will compete in the tournament on either the singles or doubles side or both. 
  • Doubles play will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday with singles competition set to follow at 12:45 p.m. 

Singles Situation

  • So far on the season Washburn has gone 56-14 (80.0%) in singles matches.
  • After winning the ITA Central Region Championship, Renske Ubachs leads the team with a 12-2 singles record. 
  • Riko Konno has gone 9-1 on the year to begin her freshman season. 
  • Saajida Razick is off to a 7-1 start in singles competition. 
  • Maddie Shelley has began the season 5-0. 
  • Jasel Bailey picked up where she left off to begin the season 6-1.
  • Charlotte Bair is 7-2 on the year in singles play through three tournaments. 
  • Daniela Tijaro has compiled a 7-3 record in singles play to begin the year.
  • Peyton Koper is 3-4 on the singles side to open the season. 

Doubles Dominance

Last Time Out

EDMOND, Okla. -- For a second straight year Renske Ubachs is an ITA Regionals Championship winner, this time capturing the singles Central Region title in the final day of action in Edmond, Okla.  

The victory for Renske Ubachs is the third singles regional championship in women's program history for the Ichabods, the first since Sonia Smagina won in 2022. With the win she secures an automatic bid into the ITA Cup taking place in Rome, Ga. between Oct. 3-5. 

Ubachs began the day falling behind by a set, losing 6-1 to Maria Fiacan of Augustana in the semifinals. She bounced back for a quick 6-2 win in the second set. She carried the momentum into a 6-3 third set win to move into the championship match.  

In the finals Ubachs jumped in front right away, winning 6-1 in the first set over Central Oklahoma's Pete Komada. The second set went the same way again, winning 6-1 to finish the dual in just over an hour and capture the regional title.  

On the doubles side, Peyton Koper and Jasel Bailey faced off with Komada and Ayaka Koga from the Bronchos in the semifinal round later in the day. UCO took an early advantage with Koper and Bailey hanging close. Late in the set Central Oklahoma pulled away for an 8-4 win.  

Next time on the court for Washburn will be in Omaha, Neb. at the Omaha Invitational on Oct. 3.  

Head Coach Kirby Ronning

  • Ronning is in year six as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 176-60 combined record with Washburn.
  • Has been named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year four times and the MIAA Coach of the Year twice. 
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022.
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

The Assistants

  • Kurt Reid enters year seven as a volunteer assistant coach for the Ichabods. Reid started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • A Topeka-native, Reid played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Graduate assistant Santiago Renton is entering his 2nd season as part of the Washburn coaching staff.  
  • He moved from playing to the sidelines after wrapping up three seasons with the Ichabods headlined by an ITA Cup Doubles National Championship in fall of 2023. 
  • Maja Jung also is entering year two on the coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the women's program. 
  • Jung was an All-American in both singles and doubles and is 2nd in program history in career victories. 

FALLING FORWARD

  • The Washburn Invitational will wrap up the fall season for the Ichabods. They will begin the spring season in late January, 2026.
