TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn baseball will head to Florida for four games against Sunshine State Conference opponents beginning on Friday at 1 p.m. CST against Lynn. 
 

LEADING OFF

>> Washburn baseball heads further south to the eastern time zone for the South Florida Baseball Jamboree beginning Friday, Feb. 7. 

>> The Ichabods face Lynn University on Friday at 1 p.m. to begin the trip around Florida. They face Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Nova Southeastern at 1 p.m. on Sunday. They finish out the tournament against Barry at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10. 

>> Washburn is 1-3 on the year after losing three straight games to finish off the Dugan Invitational with an 11-2 loss to Southern Arkanasas on Feb. 3 last time out. 

>> The Ichabds are coming off a third straight 30-win season in 2024. They finished the campaign 32-21 overall and 21-12 in the MIAA, finishing fifth in the regular season and advancing to the MIAA Championship Tournament. 

>> They were picked to finish fifth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

BODS AND BITS

>> Washburn is scoring 6.00 runs per game while opponents are at 8.25.

>> The Ichabods are 1-3 this season in neutral field games, they have not played a home or road game so far. Last season they went 15-7 at Falley Field, 15-12 in road games and 2-2 in neutral field games.

AROUND THE ORDER

>> Darian Duhon started all four games for the Ichabods and leads the team with a .533 batting average and a .588 OB%. He has driven in two RBI with eight hits. He ranks third in the MIAA and 13th in the nation in total hits, in batting average he is 7th in the conference and 51st nationally. 

>> Hayden Priest is tied for second on the team with a .412 average while leading the squad with four home runs and eight RBI. He carries a 1.588 OPS and has scored five runs. Behind the plate he does not have an error. He is tied for the MIAA lead in home runs and is second in the nation in bombs. He is second nationally in total bases, 15th in slugging percentage and 19th in RBI. 

>> Payton McHarg is tied for second on the team with a .412 average while starting all four games. He has a 1.150 OPS with one home run and four RBI. He is fifth in the conference in hits and 41st in the nation. 

>> Easton Bruce is hitting .375 on the year starting and playing all four games. He has a 1.2887 OPS with a pair of home runs and four RBI. Four of his six hits are extra base knocks. He is tied for third in the MIAA in home runs and 12th nationally. He is tied for the conference lead in doubles. 

>> Cash Jay has played and started in all four games hitting .273 with a .893 OPS. He is tied for the team lead with four walks for a .529 OB%. 

>> Jackson Mervosh has made four starts, hitting .273 with a .721 OPS. He has driven in three runs and scored three runs of his own. 

>> Blake Scott is hitting .250 on the year while playing and starting in four games. He is tied for the team lead with four walks for a .428 OB%. 

>> Connor Scott has started all four games with one home run. Both his hits have gone for extra bases. 

>> Jett Buck has one home run and two RBI across four starts. 

ON THE MOUND

>> Caleb Lunnon has tossed 7.0 innings in his one start, allowing one run with a 1.29 ERA and a .57 WHIP. He leads the team with six strikeouts and has not walked a batter. He is tied for the best strikeout-to-walk ratio in the nation and is 39th nationally in WHIP and second in the MIAA. 

>> Cooper Carlgren has started one game and thrown 6.0 innings with a 1.50 ERA. He has five strikeouts and a .83 WHIP while allowing just three hits. He ranks 10th in the conference in ERA and WHIP.

>> Caden Bressler is 1-0 on the year after throwing 3.0 innings and not allowing a run or a hit. He has struck out two batters with a .33 WHIP. 

>> Kuyper Kendall has thrown 1.2 innings without allowing a run in two appearances out of the bullpen. 

>> Grant Zwald has not allowed a run through 1.1 innings to begin the season. He has just a .75 WHIP. 

>> Gavin Wilhelm has made one start throwing 3.0 innings with a 6.00 ERA. He has struck out one  with no walks. 

>> Keegan McDonald has made two appearances throwing 1.2 innings with a 5.40 ERA and two strikeouts.

HEAD COACH HARLEY DOUGLAS

>> Former Washburn All-MIAA outfielder Harley Douglas enters his 11th season at the helm of the Washburn baseball program in 2025.

>> In nine seasons, Douglas carries an all-time record of 257-220 with six appearances in the MIAA Tournament and led the program to its first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2022.

>> He has also coached a total of 63 all-MIAA selections, including the MIAA Player and Pitcher of the Year in 2016.

>> Prior to returning to his alma mater in 2012 he was the head coach at St. Marys HS from 2003-06 and at Rossville HS from 2007-10. 

>> Douglas is a two-time Washburn graduate, receiving his Exercise Physiology degree in 2002 before earning an Education degree in 2004. He also earned a Master's Degree in Adaptive Special Education from Emporia State in 2010. 

ASSISTANT COACHES

>> Connor Crimmins is in his seventh season with the Ichabods after spending the prior two seasons on Brad Hill's Kansas State staff serving as a graduate assistant

>> While at Washburn, Crimmins played both football and baseball, finishing his career on the diamond top 10 in sacrifice flies (4th/11), doubles (6th/38) and RBI (t-7th/132), while having the 12th-most at-bats (575).

>> He graduated from Washburn in 2016 with his bachelor's and earned his master's in college student development and counseling from K-State.  

>> Rane Pfeifer is in his second season on the coaching staff after finishing his playing career with the Ichabods in 2023. 

>> He finished his career second all-time in opponent batting average (.218), third in games started (36), fourth in strikeouts (210) and 19th in innings pitched (165.2)

>> Pfeifer graduated from Washburn with a bachelor's degree in business management in May 2022

>> Lynn is 1-2 on the year after a 6-4 win over Delta State last time out on Feb. 2.

>> David Judge is hitting .417 through three games with a 1.129 OPS. He has the team's only home run and has driven in three RBI.

>> The pitching staff has a 5.67 ERA across 27.0 innings with 20 strikeouts and 15 walks.

>> They are 67th in the nation in ERA as a staff and in hits allowed per nine innings they rank 79th.

>> Brad Benton leads the team with 4.2 innings pitched in one appearance out of the bullpen. He has not allowed a run and has struck out four batters with a .86 WHIP.

>> Palm Beach Atlantic is 0-4 to begin the 2025 season after losing 9-5 to No. 3 Catawba last time out on Feb. 3. 

>> Last season the Sailfish went 21-25 overall and 17-13 in the SSC, missing the conference tournament. 

>> All four games this season have been at home at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park. 

>> Kent Bottenfield is in his 14th season leading Palm Beach Atlantic where he has a 260-318 record. He has three seasons with 25+ wins. 

>> As a team the Sailfish hit .231 with a .280 OB% and have yet to hit a home run. 

>> They rank fourth in the SSC and 46th nationally in doubles and are 11th in the nation with three sacrifice bunts. 

>> Matthew Faranda is slashing .438 on the year to lead the team across four games. He has a 1.034 OPS with two doubles and three RBI. He is second in the SSC and tied for 41st nationally in hits. 

>> Ben Green has started all four games hitting .333 with a .722 OPS. He has driven in four runs and scored a team-high four. 

>> The pitching staff has a 4.50 ERA across 36.0 innings with 35 strikeouts and 18 walks.

>> Dane Hall has made one start on the year throwing six innings and allowing two runs. He has a 1.50 ERA and has struck out a team-high eight.

NOVA SOUTHEASTERN SHARKS

>> Nova Southeastern is 3-1 to begin the season after falling for the first time to Wingate on Feb. 2, 11-3. 

>> They are ranked No. 22 in the NCBWA Preseason national poll. 

>> Last season they went 28-18 overall and 18-12 in the SSC. 

>> Adrian Morales is in his second season as the head coach for Nova Southeastern where he has a 31-19 record. 

>> The Sharks offense is hitting .282 overall with a .430 OB% and has five home runs on the year. 

>> They are first in the SSC and 18th in the nation with 25 walks. In home runs they also lead the conference while ranking 17th in the nation. 

>> Roylan Quevedo is hitting .600 across all four games with a 1.551 OPS. He has a team-high nine hits and has driven in eight runs. He has the 18th highest batting average in the nation and is 7th nationally in hits. 

>> Justin Wachs has started in all four games and is hitting .500 with a team-high 1.754 OPS. He has hit two home runs and has a team-high 12 RBI. He leads the nation in RBI and is 18th nationally in SLG%. 

>> The pitching staff has a 6.17 ERA across 35.0 innings with 38 strikeouts and 15 walks. 

>> At 9.8 they rank 30th in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings. In walks per nine innings they are 4th in the conference and 40th nationally. 

>> Frederico Zapata has appeared in two games throwing 5.1 innings and has not allowed a run. He has a 2-0 record and has struck out six with a .75 WHIP. He is tied for the nation lead in victories.

>> Barry is 3-0 on the year after defeating No. 3 Catawba 5-4 last time out in Miami Shores, Fla. on Feb. 2. They will play two games this weekend before taking on the Ichabods. 

>> Last season the Bucs went 28-22 on the year and 16-14 inside the SSC. 

>> D.J. Price is in his first season at the helm of the Barry baseball program. 

>> The Bucs offense is hitting .313 with a .412 OB% and 3 home runs. 

>> They are first in the SSC and 4th nationally with 13 stolen bases on the year. They have the 33rd best batting average in the nation. 

>> Harry Vargas Seguera leads the team with a .583 batting average making starts in all three games. He has one home run and has driven in three for a 1.643 OPS. He is also 2-2 on stolen base attempts. His batting average ranks 22nd in the nation and he is 13th in hits per game. 

>> Nick Toms is hitting .417 through three games with a 1.250 OPS. He has one home run and three RBI while scoring three runs. He is 5th in the SSC in total bases. 

>> The pitching staff has a 3.00 ERA across 27.0 innings with 23 strikeouts and 20 walks.

>> They have the 16th best ERA in the nation and 2nd best in the SSC. In WHIP they rank 63rd in the nation at 1.59.

>> Mason Blocker has made one start, throwing 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and did not allow a run while also not committing a walk.

>> Griffin Huiatt is tied for 15th in program history with four saves.

PRO BODS

>> Washburn baseball has a presence in the pro ranks with 2023 All-MIAA second-team pitcher Casey Steward being in the Philadelphia Phillies minor league system. In 2024 he split time at the A and A+ level finishing the year with an 8-5 record and 3.42 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 102.2 innings. 

>>Steward became the second Ichabod to have his name called under head coach Harley Douglas after being selected in the 19th round with the 583rd pick in the 2023 MLB Draft.
