FORT SMITH, Ar. -- Washburn left no doubt Sunday afternoon, picking up its second sweep of the season with a 19-10 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Ichabods stay on the road facing Fort Hays State on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The offense got started on the third pitch of the game with a double by Darian Duhon. Three batters later Jett Buck scored him with a single, Easton Bruce did the same, scoring two runs that got on base from a pair of walks. A sacrifice fly from Jackson Mervosh completed the four-run first.
Chase Torkelson started on the mound for The Ichabods (17-15, 10-10 MIAA) and sat down the Lions (9-21, 4-16 MIAA) with three scoreless innings to begin the game. On the offensive side, Washburn continued to add in the third with singles from Payton McHarg and Jett Buck to begin the inning. Mervosh and Blake Scott each scored one of them with singles of their own to go up 6-0.
The next inning Cash Jay hit a one out homer and after a double from McHarg they got another as Buck went yard. In the bottom of the inning Arkansas-Fort Smith strung together three singles to make it 9-1. The Ichabod offense continued to churn with a leadoff single by Mervosh in the fifth. Connor Scott singled with one out to score him. After another Duhon double both were scored on a single by Jay. McHarg plated one more with a single and Buck homered for a second straight inning to make it 15-1.
After loading the bases in the sixth Hayden Priest cleared them with one swing on a double into right center. In the seventh a pair of pinch hitters plated a run with a single by Ricky Powell and a double from Garrett Springer.
In the bottom of the seventh the Lions were able to score nine runs on five hits with a pair of home runs to make it 19-10, extending the game. Kai Bennett tossed a scoreless eighth inning to maintain the deficit. Fidel Hatch did the same in the ninth to complete the first road sweep of the season for Washburn.
The Ichabods out-hit UAFS 21-13 in the game, with nine extra base hits. Arkansas-Fort Smith was able to work nine walks, with six for Washburn.
Seven players took the mound for the Ichabods, combining for eight strikeouts. Three came from Chase Torkelson who earned the win throwing five innings and allowing just one run.
At the plate seven players had multi-hit games led by a 4-5 day with two home runs and five RBI by Jett Buck. Cash Jay and Hayden Priest each had two hits with three RBI while Payton McHarg slashed three hits.
