TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Washburn Ichabods opened MIAA play with a conference doubleheader sweep over Northeastern State winning 7-5 and taking the nightcap 10-2 in five innings. Washburn returns to action Saturday at No. 6 Rogers State.
Game 1 – WU 7, NSU 5
The RiverHawks took an early 1-0 lead in their first at bat taking advantage of an Ichabod error, but Washburn (16-7, 2-0 MIAA) came back five runs in the top of the second taking a 5-1 lead as Washburn sent nine to the plate.
Kate Ediger led off the inning with a double and then came around to score on a single to
Ellington Hogle. After
Jaden LaBarge walked,
Mariah Wheeler doubled to right scoring one.
Maddie McGee picked up a double of her own scoring
Dalaney Anderson. Washburn wrapped up the inning with a sac fly driving in one more.
The RiverHawks scored two more in the bottom of the second cutting Washburn's lead to 5-3 and the score would remain the same until the top of the fifth when Washburn sent in a solo run after Ediger drew a walk and scored on an RBI single by LaBarge. In the sixth, the Ichabods added another run when a sac by by Hogle scored
Makenzie Sais who reached on a fielder's choice.
Jenna Sprague tossed 5 2/3 innings for the win striking out three and
Sadie Walker picked the final 1 1/3 innings striking out two.
Game 2 – WU 10, NSU 2 (5 innings)
A seven-run second inning propelled the Ichabods to a 10-2, five inning run rule game in the second game of the twin bill.
In the big inning, Washburn sent 13 batters to plate. Sevn different Ichabods scored in the inning with Boles and Wheeler each scoring twice. Boles started things off with a double and after Wheeler drew a walk, a sac bunt by
Dalaney Anderson and a walk by McGee set up a 2-RBI single from Sais. Hogle drove in another run with a single of her own then
Kaylee Wagner cleared the bases with two-run homer to right that led to a RiverHawk pitching change. Ediger singled then Boles had her second double of the inning driving in one. Washburn plated its final run of the inning with a single by Anderson.
The Ichabods added a solo run in the fourth on a solo home run by LaBarge.
Walker picked up the win in the second game tossing all five innings striking out six with no walks. Sais and Wagner each drove in two. In the win.
