ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabods split an MIAA doubleheader on Friday at Missouri Western taking the opener 2-0 before falling to the Griffons in the nightcap 5-4. The Ichabods will play their final regular season road contests at Northwest Missouri on Saturday in Maryville, Mo.
Game 1 – WU 2, MWSU 0
The Ichabods scored both of their runs in their first at-bat of the game leading to the series-opening win.
Ellington Hogle started the game by drawing and walk and then
Makenzie Sais reached on a bunt and after an
Alexis Tanguma single sending Sais to third, she would score putting the Ichabods up 1-0. A two-out
Jaden LaBarge single drove in Tanguma as the Ichabods stretched their lead to 2-0.
Tanguma, who started in the circle for Washburn, held the Griffons without a hit until two outs in the fourth inning breaking up the no-hit bid. Overall Tanguma (4-1) limited the Griffons to four hits in the game throwing 99 pitches.
Washburn (28-17, 10-8 MIAA) finished with seven hits in the game with Tanguma,
Erin Boles and
Kate Ediger all recording two hits.
Game 2 – MWSU 5, WU 4
Washburn jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, but the Griffons scored four in the fourth and one more in the fifth leading to the 5-4 win.
In the second,
Kaylee Wagner led off the inning with a home run down the line staking the Ichabods to the early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Hogle connected on a two-out double and after a single from Sais, Tanguma singled scoring one. Wagner then picked up another RBI with a single to left scoring Sais.
The Griffons scored four runs in the fourth inning to go up 4-3 using a bases-clearing double and an RBI single.
Missouri Western (22-19, 9-11 MIAA) stretched its lead to 5-3 lead fifth. The Ichabods rally came up shot after adding a solo run in the sixth inning on a Boles RBI double trimming the lead to 5-4. In the seventh, the Ichabods left one on base as the game ended.
Sadie Walker struck out six in the circle falling to 13-7 in the circle. Wagner led the Ichabods with three hits.
