Washburn tennis garners four Central Region awards from ITA

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Washburn tennis was recognized with four awards between the men's and women's teams in the ITA Central Region honors released on Monday morning from the International Tennis Association.  

Head coach Kirby Ronning was named Coach of the Year on the women's side of the Central Region, graduate assistant Santiago Rendon earned Assistant Coach of the Year honors for the men, Tim Hammes was named Senior Player of the Year for the men and Daniela Tijaro earned Rookie of the Year honors on the women's side.  

Ronning led the women's team to a 17-4 record on the year with an 8-1 record in the MIAA, winning a share of the MIAA Regular Season Championship. The Ichabods made a fifth straight NCAA Tournament on the women's side under Ronning, advancing to the Central Region finals. It is the fourth time that Ronning has been named ITA Central Region Coach of the Year, the second on the women's side (2022-23).  

In his first season off the court Santiago Rendon earns regional Assistant Coach of the Year honors on the men's side. He helped guide the men's squad to a dominant fall tournament season along with a 20-3 record so far in the spring. Washburn won a third straight MIAA/GAC Tournament Championship and advanced to a second straight NCAA National Championship appearance.  

Adding to his career achievements, Tim Hammes was named the ITA Senior Player of the Year on the men's side. Last year he was named the ITA Central Region Player to Watch. Has compiled a 26-7 record in singles this season going 15-6 in duals and 14-6 at No. 1. Is 7-5 against ranked opponents. In doubles he has gone 23-7 with a 13-6 mark at No. 1 and is 3-2 in ranked duals. In the fall he won the ITA Central Region Singles Championship along with the ITA Cup Doubles National Championship with Matthew Earle.  

Daniela Tijaro begins her career with a regional award being named the Rookie of the Year on the women's side. Tijaro has been ranked in the top-10 nationally by the ITA in doubles along with Renske Ubachs. She is 27-7 on the year in doubles going 16-4 at No. 1 and 3-3 against ranked opponents. In singles she has added a 17-11 record playing between No. 2 and No. 4 and she is 2-2 in ranked matches.  

The Ichabod men's team continues its season in the NCAA Round of 16 taking on Concordia University Irvine on Tuesday, May 20 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
