Washburn cross country teams back in action Sunday at D2 Pre-Nationals meet

The Washburn Ichabod cross country teams will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Rim Rocks Farms outside of Lawrence.

TIMING
The 8K men's race will start at 9:30 a.m. and the 6K women's race is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m.
 
WHO IS GOING
The men's lineup will consist of Alex Adams, Brody Anderson, Esteban Boisseau, Aidan Braun, Hunter DeLeeuw, Sebastiaan Horselenberg, Rhys Johnson, Taylor Karcz, Adrian Lehman, Lukas Mehl, Logan Montgomery, Madden Rutherford, Zack Stoermer, Devin Trent, Ludovico Vaccari, Gunner Wagner, Kyle Wagoner, Layne Whisler and Trent Zimbelman.
The women's squad will have Riley Ammons, Riley Britton, Alexis Chadek, Grace Collins, Jolie Evans, Cheyenne Hittle, Mya Kafka, Monika Panoutsou, Nelly Puente, Kenzie Ross and Misti Schlabach.
 
WASHBURN NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Washburn Ichabod men's squad is ranked 16th in the latest USTFCCCA national poll released on Oct. 7, up from No. 19 the previous poll. The Ichabods are on top of the regional rankings up from second after their win at the Augustana Invitational on Sept. 25. The Ichabod women's team was left out of the latest national and regional rankings heading into the meet at Rim Rock.
 
MIAA PRESEASON POLLS
The Washburn Ichabod men's cross country squad was selected to finish second in the 2026 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) men's cross country preseason coaches poll and the women's team was picked to finish seventh.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
MEN
(Sept. 25, 2026) SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 19-ranked Washburn men's cross country team placed five runners inside the top 18 overall as the Ichabods team claimed the team championship Friday at the Augustana Invitational, totaling 54 points to finish ahead of No. 30 Nebraska-Kearney (62) and host squad, No. 14 Augustana (67) picking up its first meet title since winning the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 30, 2022 for its second win in program history.
Junior Sebastiaan Horselenberg led the Ichabods with a fifth-place finish, covering the 8K course in 24:25.4. Freshman Brody Anderson followed closely behind in seventh place with a time of 24:30.7 in his collegiate debut while senior Lukas Mehl crossed the line 10th overall in 24:42.4.
Freshman Madden Rutherford added a 14th-place finish, recording a time of 24:47.4, and sophomore Adrian Lehman rounded out the Washburn scoring five in 18th place with a mark of 24:50.2. The Ichabods placed all five scorers among the top 18 finishers in the field, creating a 25-second spread from their first runner to their fifth runner.
Freshman Hunter DeLeeuw was Washburn's sixth finisher, placing 28th in 25:03.2, while junior Trent Zimbelman came across in 62nd place with a time of 25:33.1.
Sophomore Taylor Karcz finished 77th overall in 25:46.1 and freshman Rhys Johnson completed the course in 26:45.9, placing 142nd.
WOMEN
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Freshman Nelly Puente paced the Washburn women's cross country team with a top-20 finish as the Ichabods placed eighth in a strong 20-team field Friday at the Augustana Invitational. Washburn scored 208 points in the 6,000-meter race, finishing ahead of South Dakota State and Concordia (Neb.) among others.
Washburn's top five runners all finished among the top 67 competitors in the field, led by Puente, who crossed the finish line in 20th place with a time of 21:27.2. The freshman recorded the team's top finish in the race and helped the Ichabods secure an eighth-place team result. Her time was just three seconds off the Ichabod record time on an 6K course and was also the fastest by an Ichabod women's runner on the Yankton Trail Course by nearly 90 seconds topping Kaylee Snell's mark from Nov. 5, 2016.
Senior Jolie Evans turned in the second-fastest time for Washburn, placing 32nd overall in 21:46.3. Junior Riley Britton followed closely behind, finishing 39th in 22:03.4. Both Evans and Britton recorded personal-best performances.
Freshman Monika Panoutsou added a 64th-place finish in 22:26.6 while senior Grace Collins rounded out the Ichabod scoring five with a 67th-place finish in 22:32.0. Junior Riley Ammons also posted a personal-best time of 22:36.1, placing 71st overall, while freshman Alexis Chadek finished 89th in 23:02.2.  Kenzie Ross was 135th in a time of 23:50.1 while Misti Schlabach was 166th in a time of 24:35.5 and Cheynne Hittle was 190th (25:08.90).
Rogers State captured the team title with 81 points, followed by Black Hills State (86) and Dordt (103). Washburn's 208 points placed the Ichabods eighth among the 20 scoring teams in the meet.
 
UP NEXT
The Washburn Ichabod men's and women's team will be back in action at the MWSU Invitational on Oct. 24 at the Missouri Western Cross Country Course in St. Joseph, Mo. The site will also host the MIAA Championships on Nov. 7.
