Washburn men's track and field team enters final day in third place at MIAA Championships

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod men's track and field team was paced by a dominant showing in the high jump and heptathlon while advancing qualifiers on to the final day during day two of the 2026 MIAA Indoor Championships at the Robert W. Plaster Center.

The Washburn multi squad scored 15 team points in the heptathlon with Drew McGilton leading the way with a third-place finish scoring six points tallying 5,096 points overall earning all-MIAA honors. Alex Michiels finished fourth with 4,918 points scoring five points and Judah Bowell placed fifth scoring four team points.

The Ichabods scored 8.5 points in the high jump, placing four athletes in the top nine. Slade Smith led the group with a fifth-place finish, clearing 2.07m (6-9.50) to score four points. Jordan Dale also cleared 2.07m and placed sixth for three points, while Matthew Heckman tied for seventh at the same height to add 1.5 points.

In the men's weight throw, Caden Rhamy recorded a top mark of 16.09m (52-9.50).

In the long jump, Peyton Holmes narrowly missed scoring with a ninth-place finish at 6.98m (22-11.00). Zuri Glenn followed with a 6.94m effort.

On the track, Jake Muller delivered a standout performance in the 600-yard prelims, clocking 1:10.46 to post the fastest qualifying time and advance to the final. Brayden Peek also advanced with a 1:11.20, giving Washburn two finalists in the event. Sam Baxter added a 1:14.66 effort.

Bryce Cochran narrowly missed advancing in the 400-meter dash, finishing ninth overall in 47.60.

In the 60-meter dash prelims, Ja'Laveyn January led Washburn with a 6.83, followed by Tayveon Simms (6.87) and Eddie Craig (6.94). In the 60-meter hurdles, Sam Baxter ran 8.35, with Drew McGilton (8.89) and Judah Bowell (9.03) also competing.

The Ichabod team score of 39.5 points is third in the team standings trailing Missouri Southern with 45 and Pittsburg State who has 51.50 entering the final day on Sunday.
