SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Washburn was quieted offensively Sunday morning in a 4-3 12-inning loss to Indianapolis in the final game of the Drury Invitational. The Ichabods return to action facing Northwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday, March 4 in Alva, Okla.
Mark Hoffman got the start for Washburn (6-9) and worked three scoreless innings to begin the game. In the top of the fourth Ian Luce led off with a single for the Ichabods and was moved around to third. Jack Borgmann drove in the run with an RBI groundout for the first run of the game.
The Greyhounds (6-9) tied it right back up with a solo home run to lead off the home half of the fourth. Hoffman finished off the rest of the inning to keep the game tied and finish his outing.
Kyle Snyder and Blake Priest each pitched scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth respectively to keep the game tied. In the seventh Borgmann reached with a one-out single and was followed by a home run to left for Trenton Barry, his first of the year, putting Washburn in front 3-1.
Indianapolis got one run back in the bottom of the seventh and again in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game up at three. Fidel Hatch entered in the eighth and finished the inning to keep the game tied. He went on to throw a scoreless ninth and tenth inning as the game moved into extra innings.
In the 11th inning the Ichabods navigated around two Greyhound baserunners with Scout Jellison retiring the only two batters he faced to end the inning. Indianapolis would be able to scratch across a run in the 12th, striking together three singles along with a walk to win 4-3.
Washburn was out-hit 16-4 in the game while working just three walks compared to eight for the Greyhounds. No player had more than one hit, Jackson Mervosh reached twice with a hit and walk. Trenton Barry had two RBI on his home run.
Nine pitchers took the mound for the Ichabods. Mark Hoffman allowed just one run and struck out three across his four innings. Fidel Hatch tossed 2.1 scoreless out of the bullpen. The unit combined to strike out nine.
