JOPLIN, Mo. -- Washburn took an early lead and made a run late but fell 17-15 to Missouri Southern in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods will finish out the road trip on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
Washburn (8-14, 5-5 MIAA) opened the scoring right away with Levi Risnehoover making the Lions pay for an error hitting a two-out double to score two in the first. Another error set up a Trenton Barry double to score one in the second to put the Ichabods up 3-0.
Missouri Southern (11-10) answered back in the bottom of the second, with a pair of two-out hits each scoring two to put them in front 4-3. Next time up for Washburn, Risenhoover singled and scored on a two-run homer by Brooks Richardson to left. The Lions tied the game up with a solo home run in the home half of the inning.
Balls continued to fly out in the fourth with Brandt Beeby connecting with one to plate three after Barry and Ian Luce each singled to reach. A two-run two-out single in the bottom of the inning cut the deficit down to one at 8-7.
Another error in the field allowed the Ichabods to score one in the fifth. It was followed by a two-run blast from Luce over the wall in right center to go up 11-7. The Lions answered back with five runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the inning to go up by one. A wild pitch tied the game in the sixth, scoring Risenhoover after he doubled to begin the inning. An RBI groundout by Eli Dean put Washburn in front 13-12.
The lead traded hands again with Missouri Southern scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 14-13. They loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth before clearing them with a double to extend the lead to four.
In the ninth doubles by Luce and Jackson Mervosh plated one run. Risenhoover slashed a single to score another but that is all Washburn would get as they fell 17-15.
The Ichabods out-hit the Lions 16-13, as well as 5-3 in walks. Four errors in the field were committed by Missouri Southern, with one for Washburn.
Three pitchers appeared on the mound for the Ichabods, combining for five strikeouts. Fidel hatch threw three innings with four punchouts.
Four players had at least three hits for Washburn led by a 4-6 effort with three RBI for Levi Risenhoover. Ian Luce went 3-5 with a home run while Brooks Richardson and Brandt Beeby each also went yard.
