CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Washburn gave up nine runs in the seventh inning Sunday afternoon to fall 12-5 in the series finale with No. 7 Rogers State. The Ichabods begin a seven-game homestand to end the regular season facing No. 14 Central Missouri on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The scoring was opened by Washburn (18-25, 14-15 MIAA) in the second inning after Gavin Wilhelm tossed a scoreless first. Jack Borgmann was hit by a pitch before moving to third on a double by Brandt Beeby. Jackson Mervosh bunted for a single that scored Borgmann. With two outs Trenton Barry lined a single into center field to plate a pair and go up 3-0.
The Hillcats (36-7, 24-5 MIAA) scored first in the third inning with back-to-back two-out doubles to score one. The Ichabods answered back the next time up stringing together three straight singles capped by Ian Luce scoring Owen Laessig with a hit up the middle. They added another run in the fifth with Mervosh slashing a single to score Borgmann who doubled to lead off the inning.
The first four batters for Rogers State reached in the fifth inning with two scoring on a single to make it 5-3. Griffin Huiatt took over in the middle of the inning, retiring three of four batters he faced. In the seventh inning the first six Hillcats reached base, scoring three runs to take the lead. Three straight bases-loaded walks scored three more before an RBI groundout and single up the middle added another three runs to the nine-run inning and made it 12-5.
Washburn got two hits over the next two innings and were unable to bring across any runs as Rogers State took the rubber match of the final regular season road series for the Ichabods.
Hits went in favor of the Hillcats just 12-11 while walks were the difference, with nine free passes worked by the Rogers State hitters and one for Washburn.
Eight pitchers took the mound for the Ichabods, combining for five strikeouts. Four came from Gavin Wilhelm in his four innings of work.
Four players had multi-hit days for Washburn. Jackson Mervosh and Trenton Barry each went 2-5 with two RBI, Ian Luce went 2-4 with a walk.
