TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn built an early lead but were unable to overcome to long ball from No. 5 Pittsburg State falling 10-7 in the series-opener on Thursday evening. The Ichabods will look to even the series in game two beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday.

After Kai Bennett delivered a scoreless first two innings Washburn (20-28, 16-18 MIAA) got on the board with a two-run blast by Brooks Richardson that drove in Brandt Beeby who doubled with two-outs. The Gorillas (39-8, 26-8 MIAA) responded with two of their own in the third on two hits and two walks.

They added two more runs on a single up the middle with two outs in the ninth but the Washburn offense managed just one hit in the final three innings to fall 10-7.
