Washburn hit .400 as a team led by
Mandi Cox's .588 percentage and 11 kills as the No. 5 Lady Blues defeated Dallas Baptist 30-11, 30-15, 30-17 Saturday morning in the second day of the Premier Mortgage Fall Classic at Lee Arena.
Cox became to 12th player in WU history to record 1,000 kills and Washburn (24-1) won for the 19th straight time to set a school winning streak record. The Lady Blues will look to add to that record as they close out the day's action with a 4 p.m. match against No. 17 West Texas A&M.
Cox entered the match needing nine kills to reach the milestone. She got five in the first two games and then got six in the third game, reaching 1,000 halfway through the game at the 15-6 mark. She now has 1,002 in her fourth year.
Tessa Jones also reached double figures with 10 kills and hit .500 while
Anna Simpson-Mills and
Joanna Alfers recorded seven kills. Alfers hit .500 with two errors in 10 attempts.
Setter
Kate Hampson had 41 assists and
Erica Cowhick led the defense with nine digs.
Stephanie Nitz had five blocks in the first game and ended with six while Jones added four.
Monica Miesner entered the match needing six kills to reach 1,000. She finished with four, playing sparingly in two of the three games. She will enter Saturday night needing two kills to become the 13th member of the 1,000 kill club and seventh member of the 1,000 kill/1,000 dig club.
Washburn hit .321 in the first match while DBU hit -.250 with 14 attack errors. The Lady Blues then hit over .400 in the final two games to put away the Patriots.
The 19 straight wins breaks the record that was set in 2005 when WU finished out the regular season and went to the second round of the MIAA tournament before losing. The Lady Blues have not lost since a 3-1 setback August 31 against Nebraska-Kearney.
