The Ichabods shot 52 percent from the floor and 48 percent from 3-point range but turned the ball over 23 times as they lost for the first time at Lee Arena this year, 82-74 against Missouri Southern Wednesday.
Washburn (11-7, 3-6 MIAA) will return to Lee Arena at 7:30 p.m. Saturday to host Missouri Western.
Andrew Meile led Washburn with 14 points while Angel Santiago had 13 and
James Williams had 11, both off the bench. Meile made a season-high four 3-pointers and was 5 of 8 from the floor.
The Ichabods fell behind quickly, 8-0 and didn't score until the 16:36 mark. The Lions built the lead to 11, 14-3 at 15:05 and led by as much as 14 in the first half.
Down just five at halftime, the Ichabods cut the lead to two points three minutes into the second period and one point, 48-47 at 12:30, however, they never took the lead.
Paul Byers and
Kyle Snyder each had five rebounds and
Grant Hargett and
James Williams each had four assists.
The loss was the first in Lee Arena for the Ichabods this year as they started the season 6-0 at home. It was also the third straight loss for Washburn overall.
Notes
• In the 62nd meeting between the two schools Washburn now leads the all-time series 43-19 but has lost three straight. It was just the fourth win in Lee Arena for MSSU.
• Hargett, Meile, Byers,
Brady Sisk and
Mario Scott all started for the fourth straight time.
• The Ichabods' 23 turnovers is a season-high. The previous high was 20 in the season opener at Kansas.
• The Ichabods shot 50 percent or better for the seventh time this year but have lost two straight when doing so. The Lions shot 50 percent, dropping WU to 1-5 when its opponent makes at least half its shots.
