Ichabods erase halftime deficit and hold on for win over Central Missouri

Paul Byers and Angel Santiago had career nights as they helped lead the 25th-ranked Ichabods to an 82-76 comeback win over Central Missouri Saturday night in front of 3,350 at Lee Arena.

Washburn improved to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA while the Mules fell to 8-3 and 1-1. The Ichabods will continue action Wednesday at 23rd-ranked Emporia State at 7:30 p.m.

Byers had his second career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. With three blocks on the night, he moved into a tie for seventh in WU career history with 58 in his three years. He was 5 of 7 from the field, hit one 3-pointer and also added two assists and two steals.

Santiago reached the 20-point mark for the second time with a season-high 22 points off 6 of 11 shooting with three 3s and he was 7 of 8 from the free throw line.

Mario Scott and James Williams also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points each.

The Ichabods shot 46 percent from the field while the Mules were just 37 percent. Washburn hit 5 of 10 3-pointers in each half for a 50 percent effort from long distance.

Washburn was down by 11 at 9:21 in the first half and went into the locker room down 44-39. The Ichabods opened the second half on a 13-5 run to take their first lead, 52-51 at the 14:04 mark. UCM then tied the score on a free throw but Byers hit a 3-pointer to put the Ichabods on top for good.

The Ichabods built a 15-point lead, their largest of the game at the 6:27 mark and then matched it again a minute later. The Mules got as close as five in the final minute but Andrew Meile hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left to give his team a six-point lead that held the rest of the way.


Notes
Paul Byers had his second career double-double. He also had one last year. He set a career high with 12 rebounds with his previous high being 11 at Barry last year.
• Angel Santiago set a season-high with 22 points. He broke his previous high of 21 set Wednesday at Missouri Western.
Kyle Snyder had a season-high 13 rebounds and reached double figures in boards for the third time this year and ninth time in his career.
• Washburn defeated Central Missouri for the first time since January 3, 2004. The Mules had one seven straight in the series. The win for WU tied the all-time series record at 40-40. It also pushed WU to 16-5 against the Mules in Lee Arena.
• Washburn made a season-high 22 free throws with a season-high 33 attempts to go 67 percent from the line one game after shooting just 41 percent.
