League's top two offenses face off as Ichabods travel to Emporia State Wednesday
The top two scoring teams in the MIAA will play each other as Washburn travels to Emporia State Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the 187th meeting between the two in-state rivals. The Ichabods enter the game 9-2 and 1-1 in the MIAA while Emporia State is 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the league.
   
The game can be heard live on AM580 WIBW throughout Topeka and most of northeastern Kansas. The audio will also be streamed live through a link at wusports.com for free and fans have the option of watching a live webcast of the game at themiaa.tv for $5.50 a game.
   
The Ichabods earned their first MIAA victory with an 82-76 comeback win against Central Missouri Saturday while the Hornets lost their third straight game and sixth in the last seven in a 93-70 defeat at Southwest Baptist.
   
Washburn was 25th in the country while ESU was ranked 23rd in the NABC national poll released December 18. Both teams dropped out of Tuesday's poll as Washburn went 3-1 since the last poll and ESU went 1-4.

Angel Santiago leads the Ichabods in scoring with 12.0 points a game, all off the bench, and he's reached double figures seven straight times. DeAndre Townsend leads ESU and the MIAA with 20.6 points and three other Hornets are in double figures.
   
The all-time series between the two schools, the most played in both their histories, is tied at 93-93 after ESU has won the last four.

About the Emporia State Hornets
The Hornets are 5-6 and after opening their season 4-0 they have since gone 1-6, including and 0-2 start to the MIAA season. Emporia State is, however 4-1 at home with the one loss coming against Newman in overtime. DeAndre Townsend leads the team and MIAA with 20.6 points a game and has started all 11 games at guard, shooting 53 percent. Guard Wes Book is scoring 17.1 points a game while guard Marvin Lee is averaging 12.7, also with 11 starts. Book and forward Caleb Tegtmeier are tied for the team lead with 6.5 rebounds a game.

WU-ESU series notes
• This will be the 187th meeting between these two schools, making it the most played rivalry for Washburn. The series is tied 93-93 with ESU winning the last four.
• Washburn's last win came in the 2004-05 MIAA Postseason Tournament in a 78-71 victory on March 4, 2005. The Hornets have since swept the season series the last two years.
• Washburn leads the series 22-8 in MIAA contests and is 11-6 at White Auditorium since joining the league in 1989-90.
• The series dates back to a pair of wins for the Ichabods in 1905-06.
• The two teams have met on the court at least once every year since the 1945-46 season.
• The two teams have played overtime games three times with the Ichabods winning twice and losing once. The Ichabods won the last overtime game, 93-89 on January 12, 2000 in Emporia.

A winning history
• The Ichabods are 1,345-927 (.592 in 2,272 games) and are in their 103rd season of basketball.
• Starting their 24th season in Lee Arena, the Ichabods are 312-55 (.850).
• In 19 seasons now as an NCAA II school, the Ichabods have 10 NCAA tournament appearances and nine MIAA titles.
• Washburn won the 1986-87 NAIA national championship with a 35-4 record under head coach Bob Chipman in his eighth year as coach.
• The Ichabods suffered their first losing season in 2005-06 since 1976-77 and first of head coach Bob Chipman's career. They also failed to advance to the MIAA tournament for the first time since joining the league in 1989-90.

League's top two scoring offenses facing off
Emporia State leads the MIAA with 85.6 points a game and the Ichabods are second in the league with 85.1 per game. Washburn compliments it offense with a defense that is allowing 66.3 points a game for a +18.8 scoring margin, second best in the league, while ESU is last in defense allowing 82.7 points a game and is ninth in scoring margin at +2.9. The Ichabods are second in rebounding with a +7.4 margin while ESU has a +1.1 margin, ninth in the MIAA.
  
The Hornets have four players in the top 20 in scoring in the conference with DeAndre Townsend leading the MIAA with 20.6 points a game. Washburn has just one top-20 scorer in Angel Santiago with 12.0 a game, 17th best.

Santiago is coming off the bench to lead the team in scoring
Junior guard Angel Santiago came off the bench in a pair of games last week to average 21.5 points a game. He scored a season-high 21 at Missouri Western on Wednesday and then bettered that by a point with 22 Saturday against Central Missouri. Santiago was 7 of 14 with four 3-pointers at MWSU and then against UCM he was 6 of 11 from the field, 3 for 6 from long distance and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. During the week he shot 52 percent from the field, 47 percent from 3-point range and 83 percent from the line. Santiago improved his scoring averaged from 9.9 points a game coming into the week to 12.0 points a game now, taking over the team lead.
   
Santiago has reached double figures seven straight times and a team-high eight times this year overall. He is second on the team with 20 steals and he's tied for second with 34 assists. Santiago is shooting 45 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range. In two MIAA games he is shooting 52 percent and averaging 21.5 points. In the last five games he is shooting 54 percent and averaging 16.4 points a game.

Point guard Mario Scott leads the Ichabods offense
Sophomore guard Mario Scott has started every game this year at the point for the Ichabods. He leads the team with 49 assists and he's third in the MIAA with 4.5 per game. Last week at Missouri Western he had 10 assists to become the first Ichabod to reach double figures since Jerad Head did it in 2004-05. Scott also leads the team with 22 steals and 2.0 per game, sixth best in the league. Scott scored a season-high 18 points against Lincoln and has reached double figures five times. He is averaging 8.6 points and 3.8 rebounds.

James Williams second on the team in scoring
Junior guard James Williams is second on the team with 10.5 points. After putting up 10 points Saturday against UCM, he has reached double figures seven times and he has led the team in scoring five times this year. His season high was 17 points against then-No. 17 Central Oklahoma. Williams ia third on the team with 18 steals. His eight points on December 17 against SOSU stopped a streak of five straight games with 10 or more points. Williams leads the Ichabods with 14.4 points a game in five home games.

Byers moves up career blocking record chart  
Junior forward Paul Byers is tied for seventh in school history with 58 career blocks. He needs four more to move into a tie for sixth and eight more will get him into the top five. He had 17 blocks last year and in 2005-06, his freshman year, he had 31, the eighth highest single-season total at Washburn. Byers begins the year fifth in school history with 0.9 blocks a game. Byers has 10 blocks this year with a team season-high of three twice this year, the last coming Saturday against UCM.
   
Along with three blocks, Byers had 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the year and second of his career. He is scoring 9.0 points a game and leads the team shooting 65 percent from the field (45 of 69). His 6.0 rebounds a game is second best on the team. Byers had a season-high 16 points off 8 of 11 shooting last Wednesday at Missouri Western.

Meile enters top 10 in career 3-pointers made
Senior guard Andrew Meile has 117 3-pointers in his career, the eighth most in school history. He needs 32 more to catch Eric Carter, who had 149 from 1997-2001. He is also eighth in 3-point attempts with 302 and 10th in 3-point shooting percentage at 39 percent.
   
Meile is averaging 6.5 points a game this year off 47 percent shooting and he's 15 of 36 from 3-point range. He is second on the team with 34 assists.

Sisk scoring in double figures for Ichabods
Senior forward Brady Sisk started his first two games of the year in the Ichabods' two wins at the St. Mary's Classic. Since then he missed the game at MWSU due to sickness but returned Saturday against Central Missouri. He led the team in the two games at St. Mary's with 14.5 points a game and 83 percent shooting (10 of 12). He also picked up 14 rebounds in the two games to lead the team. Sisk has reached double figures in scoring five times this year and 31 times in his career. His 30th double-figure scoring game came December 17 against Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Kyle Snyder leads Ichabods in rebounds
After limited playing time last year with an injury, senior Kyle Snyder has played in every game this year and has started two at forward. He leads the team with 6.9 rebounds this year and is scoring 5.5 points a game off 46 percent shooting.
   
Snyder had a season-high 13 rebounds Saturday against UCM and he had his third career double-double on December 4 against then-No. 17 Central Oklahoma with 11 points and 11 rebounds. In his two games as a starter he is averaging 8.5 points and shooting 58 percent (7 of 12).

Darnell Kimble solid in the post for Ichabods
Junior forward Darnell Kimble is fourth on the team with 9.4 points a game off 48 percent shooting. He leads the team shooting 79 percent from the free throw line (26-33) and has 11 blocks, a team high. Kimble has scored in double figures six times with a season-high 14 against Lincoln.

Bods and Ends  
• Washburn is looking for its first 3-0 start to the MIAA season since winning eight straight conference games to start the 2003-04 year.
• Washburn leads the MIAA in rebounding with 41.6 a game and is second with a +7.4 rebounding margin.
• The Ichabods are fourth in the MIAA with 10.7 steals a game. Last year they only averaged 5.6 steals.
• The Ichabods have reached the 100-point mark twice this year. In 2004-05 they scored 100 or more three times and in 2003-04 they did it five times.
• Washburn set a school and MIAA record last year with five overtime games. The Ichabods went 3-2 in the games, taking two of them to double overtime.
• The Ichabods are 31-24 all-time in overtimes with one win this year. Washburn is 6-7 all-time in 13 games that went into at least double-overtime.

Final notes on the Central Missouri Game
Paul Byers had his second career double-double. He also had one last year. He set a career high with 12 rebounds with his previous high being 11 at Barry last year.
• Angel Santiago set a team season-high with 22 points. He broke his previous high of 21 set Wednesday at Missouri Western.
Kyle Snyder had a season-high 13 rebounds and reached double figures in boards for the third time this year and ninth time in his career.
• Washburn won the rebound battle for the eighth time this year and improved to 8-0 when doing so.
• Washburn defeated Central Missouri for the first time since January 3, 2004. The Mules had won seven straight in the series. The win for WU tied the all-time series record at 40-40. It also pushed WU to 16-5 against the Mules in Lee Arena.
• Washburn made a season-high 22 free throws with a season-high 33 attempts to go 67 percent from the line one game after shooting just 41 percent.

Up Next
Washburn will continue its stretch of three straight MIAA games on the road with a 7:30 p.m. game at Northwest Missouri State Saturday. The Bearcats are also 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the league and will play at Missouri Western Wednesday night.
