Ninth-ranked Washburn fell in the first set but won three straight to defeat No. 20 Midwestern State, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21, Friday in the Lady Blues Fall Classic in Lee Arena.

The win was the 200th for Chris Herron as coach of the Lady Blues, and Monica Miesner, with 14 digs, moved into second at Washburn with 1,636 in her career. Kate Hampson also moved into second in Washburn career history with 3,772 assists.

The Lady Blues (16-2) will wrap up the classic with a match against Incarnate Word Saturday at 11 a.m. and then another against Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m.

Washburn fell 26-24 in the opening set but then squeaked by in the next three to hand the Mustangs (18-2) their second loss of the day and the season. No. 11 Emporia State gave MSU its first loss earlier in the day.

Four Lady Blues reached double figures in the match with Mollie Lacy leading with 18. Ashley Shepard had 16, Caitlin Conley had 11 and Miesner had 10.

Shepard had her third career double-double with 11 digs and Miesner had her 59th career double-double as her 14 digs moved her past Shanna Haslett, who had 1,627 for WU from 1988-90.

Lacy led the team with a .455 attack percentage and Conley hit .385 with just one error in 26 tries. The Lady Blues hit .213 as a team and hit .344 in the fourth and deciding set.

Hampson had a season-high 51 assists and added a double-double with 16 digs. Milly Smith also had 16 to tie Hampson for the team lead.

The Lady Blues were blocked six times in the opening set and they were out-blocked 10-8 overall. Lacy led WU with four blocks and Stephanie Nitz had two solo efforts.

The Lady Blues grabbed a 4-3 lead in set one and held it until a 22-22 tie on an attack error. The Mustangs later took the lead at 24-23 to force set point but Shepard's kill tied it at 24-24. Hillary White then had two straight kills for MSU for the win.

Washburn led 7-1 in the second set but a 6-0 run by MSU later gave the Mustangs a 15-14 lead. The lead changed hands twice more before Washburn gained it at 18-17 in the first point of a 3-0 run that propelled the Lady Blues to a win and a 1-1 match score. Conley forced set point with a kill and then an MSU error gave WU the win.

There were six ties and three lead changes in the third set but they all came early as WU took control for good at 10-9. An MSU attack error forced game point at 24-19 but WU gave up two more points before Ashley Shepard put the set away with a kill.

There were four ties early in the fourth set but Washburn gained control at 10-9 and held on for the win. Nitz' kill on the final play gave WU the win.
