Lady Blues use a pair of big runs to sweep at Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Lady Blues started the match on an 11-1 run in set one and they ended with an 18-1 run in the third set to sweep Missouri Southern, 25-18, 27-25, 25-13, Wednesday night in MIAA action. No. 8 Washburn improved to 19-2 and 4-2 in the MIAA while MSSU fell to 6-12 and 1-5.

Washburn will return home to host Southwest Baptist Friday at 7 p.m. in Lee Arena.

Mollie Lacy led the team in attack percentage, kills and blocks. She hit .560 with 15 kills and just one error in 25 attempts and she blocked six MSSU attacks. In the first set she hit .875 with seven kills and no errors in eight tries.

Monica Miesner also reached double figures with 10 kills and Molly Smith led the defense with 16 digs.

Kate Hampson had 32 assists and she moved closer to tying the school's career record. She now has  3,881 and needs 34 more to tie Lindsey Kersting, who had 3,915 from 1999-02.

The Lady Blues gave up the first point of the match on a kill by the Lions' Ashley Hill. Washburn then went on an 11-0 run to take an 11-1 lead. Lacy and Miesner each had two kills during the run and MSSU had six errors.

MSSU got within three at 17-14 but the Lady Blues ended on a 4-1 run to clinch the opener. Jessica Wade had WU's final two points on a pair of kills.

The second set was played much closer. Washburn led 20-17 but the Lions rallied late to tie it at 23-23 and then they forced set point on the next point on a WU attack error. Two straight kills from Caitlin Conley gave WU the advantage and then after another tie the Lady Blues finished on a kill from Lacy and a Missouri Southern error.

The Lady Blues were down 4-0, 9-4 and 12-7 in the third set. Their eighth point of the set ignited a 13-0 run that made the score 20-13, WU, and then after giving up a kill they closed on a 5-0 run to clinch the match.

Stephanie Nitz served 13 straight times during the first run and Hampson served four straight times to end the match. She had one of four service aces during the final run, tying a career high.

The Lady Blues hit .277 as a team while MSSU had a .162 mark. WU won the blocking battle 8-4 while MSSU edged WU 50-49 on digs.

Hill and Jeanna Feldman led MSSU with nine kills each.
