Lead slips away from Ichabods as they fall in MIAA semifinal
March 9, 2008
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Ichabods gave up a late 7-0 run and then failed to get off a shot in the final half second as they suffered their fourth one-point loss of the year, 50-49 to Northwest Missouri in a semifinal of the MIAA Championship Tournament. Washburn ended its season 18-11.
Darnell Kimble was 5 of 6 with 15 points and Grant Hargett had 10 points with a pair of 3-pointers. Kimble was 4 of 5 in the first half and the entire team shot 45 percent en route to a 29-23 lead at halftime. The Bearcats shot just 29 percent in the first half and 35 percent in the second half. They overcame their poor shooting by making 16 of 20 free throws while Washburn was just 8 of 14. NWMSU also forced 18 turnovers while committing just 10.
Both teams hit 3-pointers on their first possessions of the game but things slowed from there on. Washburn went on a 5-0 run to lead 17-8 and didn't allow NWMSU to get into double figures until Hunter Henry hit two free throws at 9:30.
Paul Byers had a lay-up on the next possession and Washburn led by nine, its biggest lead of the game with 8:57 remaining in the first half.
