EMPORIA, Kan. - The Ichabods scored twice in the first inning but just once the rest of the way as they fell 8-3 at Emporia State in a non-conference game Thursday. Washburn (1-3) will be in action this weekend against Nebraska-Omaha as it looks to open its home schedule. Due to a wet outfield and cold conditions, the time and location of the games may be changed.
Brian Gorges led off the game with his second home run of the year and then
Wes Joy doubled and scored on a single from
Luis Beltran Lopez III to give Washburn a 2-0 lead after half an inning.
The 17th-ranked Hornets answered with three runs in the bottom of the first. They had just one hit in the inning but took advantage of four walks and an error.
Joy scored once again in the third to tie the game when he led off the inning with a walk and eventually scored on a single from
Brett Sorensen.
Jake Iverson started for the Ichabods and worked into the fourth inning, giving up the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly. Three Ichabod relievers then gave up the next four runs before
Chris Contee pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
The Ichabod bats had six hits in the first three innings and then just three the rest of the way.
