Ichabods unleash in game 2 for 18 runs to snap losing streak and split at Northwest Missouri

After getting shut out 8-0 in the first game the Ichabods exploded for 18 runs off 18 hits in the second game to snap an eight-game losing streak and split the doubleheader with an 18-4 win at Northwest Missouri Monday.

Washburn (10-21, 7-17 MIAA) will return home Tuesday to play its fifth and sixth games in three days when it hosts Rockhurst at 4 p.m. at Falley Field.

Wes Joy led off the game with a single but it was one of just two hits for the Ichabods as they were beat 8-0 in the opener.

Calvin Iversen had the other hit with a single in the seventh. Starter Brett Sorensen pitched the entire game and allowed the eight runs off seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

The Ichabods broke a 4-4 tie with 11 runs in the sixth inning on the way to an 18-4 win. The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak and Washburn's run in the second inning snapped a streak of 17 2/3 scoreless innings after getting shut out two straight times against the Bearcats.

All nine Ichabods in the batting lineup had RBI and runs scored and eight of them had hits.

The first three Ichabods in the sixth inning reached on two walks and a hit batter and then Brian Gorges drove in two of them with a single. On their second times through the lineup Calvin Iversen and Joy drove in runs on singles and Brian Gorges cleared the bases with a three-run home run to end the scoring. In all, 14 batters came to the plate for Washburn in the inning.

The Ichabods added three more runs in the top of the seventh and after NWMSU failed to score in the bottom of the inning the game ended early with the 10-run rule.

Joy, Gorges, Dane Simoneau and Tyler Blankenship each led the offense with three hits and Gorges drove in five runs. Blankenship drove in three.

Starter Zach Engelken pitched the first six innings and allowed the four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Andrew Miller pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to end the game.
