TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team split a doubleheader with Pittsburg State taking the first game 4-3 while falling in the second game of the twin bill 3-1. Washburn (25-21, 7-5 MIAA) will be back in action in seven days at Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo., beginning at 4 p.m.
Game 1 - Washburn 4, Pittsburg State 3 - Box Score
The Lady Blues took the first game 4-3 as the teams scored all their runs in the first three innings. Washburn put two on the board in the bottom of the first as
Dani White's RBI single to left scored
Tish Williams who led off the inning with a walk.
Malarie Fellers' single to left scored
Maggie West who pinch-ran for White.
The Gorillas tied the score in the next half inning when Haley Deaton connected on a two-run homer to left. Washburn took the lead in the bottom of the second when Williams hit her 12th home run of the season. Pittsburg State tied the score in the top of the third.
The Lady Blues took the lead for good on a home run to left by
Brooke DeVader, her 10th of the season and her school-record 34th of her career.
Kelly Swygert allowed only four base runners the rest of the way, including holding the would-be tying run at third with one out in the top of the seventh. Swygert improved to 16-8 on the season.
Game 2 - Pittsburg State 3, Washburn 1 - Box Score
The Gorilas (18-21, 6-3 MIAA) scored all three of their runs in the top of the third including one unearned run in a 3-1 over the Lady Blues.
Washburn scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning after
Whitney Tapp tripled to right center to lead off the inning and was chased home by a
Danielle Hodge single to right.
Kayla Long took the loss in the circle for the Lady Blues pitching the complete game with three strikeouts and two earned runs.
Notes:
* Washburn's
Mandy Tarbutton and
Brooke DeVader played in their 209th game at Washburn - which tied the school record set by
Ashley Webb.
* The 209th start by Tarbutton tied Webb's school record for starts. DeVader has started 208 of 209 career games.
* Tarbutton broke the school record for at-bats in a career with her 668th against Pittsburg State. The previous record ws 666 set by Torrie Beauchamp from 1996 to 1999.
* DeVader moved into third on the all-time hit chart with her 213th of her career. The all-time leader is Torrie Beauchamp with 258. Chris Torrez is second on the career chart with 245.
* Tarbutton needs four hits to become the seventh Lady Blue to reach 200 hits for a career.
