Brian Gorges lifted a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game for the Ichabods but Pittsburg State doubled his output with a pair of two-run homers in the 10th for a 9-5 win over Washburn Sunday afternoon at Falley Field.
The Ichabods fell to 9-16 and 6-12 in the MIAA while PSU improved to 14-16 and 9-9 in the league. The Ichabods ended their 10-game home stand and will now begin a six-game road trip with a doubleheader at Fort Hays State Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Washburn opened up with a run in the first and two in the third but didn't score again until Gorges' game-tying blast.
Wes Joy led off the first inning with a double and then advanced to third on a fly ball from
Joe Hosey. Gorges then drove him in with a grounder to shortstop.
In the second inning
Brett Sorensen opened with a bunt single and then Luis Beltran Lopez moved him up on a sacrifice bunt. He then scored when
Tyler Blankenship singled to shallow left field and the fielder let the ball go by him for an error. Blankenship made it all the way to third on the error and then scored on a wild pitch to give WU a 3-0 lead.
Ichabods starter
Danny Cook shut out the Gorillas the first three innings then gave up two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth before being pulled.
Down 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Joy reached on a fielder's choice and then after a groundout caused the second out, Gorges hit his team-leading fifth homer to tie the game.
The Gorillas answered with a two-run blast off reliever
Andrew Miller and then another off
J.P. Verhulst. Miller, who worked 4 2/3 innings, suffered the loss.
Gorges finished 2 for 5 with three RBI and Sorensen was 3 for 5 with a run scored. Joy had two hits and two runs.
