Washburn had nine hits and 11 runs in the series opener at Emporia State Friday night but the Hornets out-slugged the Ichabods with a 15-11 win. The two teams will head to Topeka to play a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. at Falley Field to continue the series. The six Ichabods seniors will be honored in between games.
The sixth-ranked Hornets jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first two innings before Washburn cut it in half with four in the third.
Keith Hernandez drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the first. He added a grand slam in the second inning and ended up with eight RBI in the game.
Washburn showed some power of its own in the third inning to get on the scoreboard.
Joe Hosey hit his first home run of the year with a three-run shot and then
Brian Gorges made it back-to-back shots with a solo blast.
The Hornets came up empty in the bottom of the third and then Washburn stormed back with four more in the fourth to tie the game 8-8.
Cameron Kasel hit a one-out single and then scored after a hit batter and two walks forced him in.

Tyler Blankenship and then Hosey knocked in his fourth and fifth RBI with a double down the left field line.
The Hornets then scored four more times between the fourth and sixth innings to go up 12-8 but the Ichabods got within one with a three-run seventh.
Dane Simoneau singled in a run and then Blankenship drove in two with a double.
The Hornets held off Washburn the rest of the way and added three insurance runs in the eighth.
Washburn starter
Brett Sorensen allowed the first 12 runs to score off 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked just two and struck out five but got the loss to fall to 4-5.
Hosey was 3 for 5 at the plate for the Ichabods with a season-high five RBI.
