Season Statistics
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The third-ranked Lady Blues couldn't hold a 2-1 set lead as they fell in five sets (25-20, 22-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-11) at No. 11 Truman Friday night to drop their first match of the season and fall to 12-1 (1-1 MIAA).
The Lady Blues will look to bounce back as they play at Missouri Western Saturday at 2 p.m.
For the second straight year WU's regular season match at TSU went five sets. This time the Bulldogs held off Washburn's rally. They went up 1-0 after a closely-fought first set and then WU won the next two to go up 2-1. The Bulldogs won easy in the fourth set and then erased a 4-1 Washburn lead in the fifth set to win.
The loss ended Washburn's season-opening winning streak at 12 matches, two shy of the school record.
Monica Miesner and
Ashley Shepard each had double-doubles as they tied for the team lead with 13 kills. Miesner had 26 digs and Shepard had 10.
Molly Smith added a career-high 24 digs and Washburn ended the night with 97 as a team.
Both teams hit poorly but kept each other busy on defense as they combined for 207 digs off 404 total attacks. Washburn out-hit TSU .123 to .100 but the Lady Blues had 12 service errors.
There were eight ties and five lead changes in the opening set. The two teams were tied late at 19-19 and then Bulldog Lisa Weber scored two kills. After
Mollie Lacy got a kill for the Lady Blues they committed four straight errors to give the set to Truman.
Washburn took the next two sets as Truman hit .045 in set two and -.064 in set three.
WU went up 2-0 in the fourth set before giving up the lead for good and then in the fifth set they led 4-1 before Truman fought back and led for good at 7-6 on a Washburn error.
The Lady Blues got within a point at 11-10 but scored just one more time before TSU's Melissa Keck closed out the set and match with a kill.
Stephanie Nitz led the Lady Blues with six blocks while
Breanna Lewis had four. Lewis and Lacy also reached double figures in kills with 10 and 11, respectively. Lacy led with a .250 attack percentage.
Kate Hampson had 41 assists and
Amanda Guess had a season-high nine digs.
Truman (10-4, 1-1 MIAA) snapped a two-match losing streak and and a four-match skid against ranked teams. Eli Medina led the Bulldogs with 13 kills and Lisa Weber had eight blocks.
