TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods dropped a season-opening doubleheader to Bethany falling 6-3 in the opener and 9-7 in the nightcap. Washburn will be back in action this weekend in a four-game series with Bemidji State starting on Friday at 2 p.m. at Falley Field. On Saturday, there will be two seven inning games followed by a final nine inning game on Sunday.
Calvin Iverson was 5 for 7 in the double ehader with a run scored.
Travis Ice and
Wes Joy each had home runs. Ice scored three runs in the two games.
Game 1 -- Bethany 6, Washburn 3
In the opener, the Ichabods fell behind 2-0 after three inning, but rallied to score two in the bottom of the fourth inning to knot the score at 2-2.
Wes Joy and
Brian Gorges had back-to-back singles. The both moved up on a sac bunt by Brian Sorenson.
Thomas Holiday grounded out scoring Joy and Georges scored on a wild pitch. The Swedes scored a solo run in the fifth and added two more in the sixth and another solitary run in the seventh. The Ichabods added a run in the seventh on a Joy triple to left field scoring
Travis Ice.
Dustin Holthaus took the loss in the game after pitching three innings. Starter
Curtis Hamilton pitched four innings allowing one unearned run.
Game 2 -- Bethany 9, Washburn 7
After the Bethany scored two in the opening frame, the Ichabods got one run back as
Travis Ice hit his first home run in a Washburn uniform as his home run sliced around the left field foul pole. The Swedes added one more in the top of the second, but Washburn scored two in the inning tying the score at 3-3. A single by
Bryce Scott drove in Cal Iverson who singled earlier in the inning. Brett Sorenson capped the scoring with a single to left scoring Ice.
The Swedes added three more runs in the the top of the fourth stretching the lead to 8-4 before Washburn added three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Wes Joy hit his first home run of the season on home run over the right field fence.
Cameron Kasel had a two-out 2 RBI double scoring
Dane Simoneau and
Brett Sorensen pulling the Ichabods back within one at 8-7. The Swedes added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and the Ichabods went down in order in the bottom of the inning falling 9-7.
