TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team topped Rockhurst 8-3 improving to 4-3 on the season. Washburn will open MIAA play on Friday at Southwest Baptist.

After the Hawks scored an unearned urn in the top of the first, Washburn knotted the score in the bottom of the second on the first of two home runs by Dane Simoneau - his second and third ones of the season. The Ichabods were held in check over the next three innings before scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning capped by Simoneau's two-run shot with two outs scoring Brian Gorges, who singled earlier in the inning chasing Wes Joy home after he singled to lead off the inning and swiped second.

The Ichabods added four more in the eighth inning with Simoneau providing the firepower. He doubled to left center scoring Brett Sorensen who singled to center and Gorges who singled to right. Stokley Wischmeier had a pinch-hit single scoring Simoneau. Joy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded sending Andrew Moses home.

Rockhurst scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth to cut the score to 8-3, but Eldon Little pitched the final inning for the Ichabods closing out the game.

Simoneau finished 3 for 4 with 5 RBI, two home runs and three runs scored. His 5 RBI are the most by an Ichabod since he and Gorges each had five in back-to-back games against Northwest Missouri on April 13 and 14 last season. The last Ichabod to hit two home runs in a single game was teammate Wes Joy who had two against Central Missouri on March 21, 2008. Gorges had two hits for Washburn.

Joel Ricketts picked up the win for the Ichabods going six innings allowing two hits allowing an unearned run while striking out seven Hawk batters with only one walk. Chris Contee, Dustin Holthaus and Little all pitched one inning without surrendering an earned run and two overall.
