TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods made two unearned runs stand up in a 2-0 game one win as they split an MIAA doubleheader with Missouri Western on Saturday afternoon at Falley Field. The Griffons earned the split with a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
The Ichabods (7-7, 1-3 MIAA) scored the only two runs they would need in the third inning of game one. Washburn had runners at the corners with one out when an errant pick-off throw allowed
Cameron Kasel to trot home with the game's first run.
Calvin Iversen scored the second unearned run of the inning when
Wes Joy reached on a Western throwing error.
Curtis Hamilton (2-0) made the two runs stand up as he tossed a seven-inning complete game, scattering five hits. Hamilton struck out four and walked just one batter to earn his second win of the year.
Western took an early lead in game two and never trailed on their way to a 7-4 win. The Griffons (9-11, 2-6 MIAA) scored one run in the top of the first. Troy Landi led off with a triple and scored on a ground out by Drew Mannen. The Ichabods were able to tie the game in the third on an RBI groundout from Vicente Vieyra.
The Griffons took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. Washburn cut the lead to 6-3 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but could get no closer. Kasel stroked a bases-loaded double to score
Stokely Wischmeier and
Dane Simoneau. Each team scored a single run in the seventh for the 7-4 final.
Danny Cook (2-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. A.J. Huttenlocker allowed three runs on five hits in six innings to earn the win for the Griffons. Dillon Griffon tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn the save.
