TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 6-3 loss to Rockhurst on Wednesday afternoon at Falley Field. The Ichabods led 2-1, but a four-run inning by the Hawks proved to be the difference.
Rockhurst scored first on an RBI single in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Ichabods (8-9) responded with two runs in the second to take their only lead of the game.
Brian Gorges led off with a double. A hit batsmen and a walk loaded the bases for
Travis Ice. He walked to force in a run and a
Wes Joy sacrifice fly gave Washburn a 2-1 lead.
The Hawks (15-6) took the lead for good, 5-2, with four runs on five hits in the top half of the third inning. A single run in the fourth gave RU a 6-2 advantage. The Ichabods got one run back in the fifth to make it 6-3.
Dane Simoneau doubled to right center and later scored on an RBI single from
Cameron Kasel.
Brett Sorensen (0-2) allowed five runs on eight hits in three innings and was tagged with the loss.
Dustin Holthaus allowed one run in two innings and
Daren Parker,
Chris Contee and
Xavier Lewis combined for four scoreless innings of relief.
Rockhurst starter Kirk Huismann allowed three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. Jeremiah Johnson tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, while Ben Baker pitched the ninth to earn the save.
