Ichabods sweep doubleheader from Bearcats

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods improved to 10-9 on the season while lifting their MIAA record to 4-4 while sweeping Northwest Missouri at Falley Field. The same two teams will be in action on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. for another pair of games.


Game 1 - Washburn 7, Northwest Missouri 2
The Ichabods fell behind early 2-1 before scoring six unanswered runs paced by Brett Sorensen's 5 RBI in the game as the senior was 4 for 4 with two doubles, a triple and a single. Washburn tied the score in the first inning after the Bearcats scored in their opening at bat on Sorensen's first RBI of the afternoon on a double to left scoring Thomas Holiday.

The Bearcats took the lead in the top of the second inning and held the lead until the fifth inning when Washburn recorded back-to-back three-run innings. To lead off the fifth, Travis Ice walked after falling behind 0-2 then taking four straight balls. Wes Joy was hit by a pitch and Holiday walked on four straight pitches. Sorensen connected on a triple down the right field line clearing the bases and put Washburn up 4-2.

Washburn added another three-spot in the bottom of the next inning after Cameron Kasel led off the frame with a walk. Ice was hit by a pitch and Joy reached on a fielder's choice. Following a balk by the Bearcats which scored Kasel, Sorensen drove in his fifth run of the game on a single to center scoring Joy. Dane Simoneau singled to left driving in Holiday with the seventh run of the game.

The Ichabods' Curtis Hamilton after allowing two runs in the first two innings picked up the complete-game win throwing 85 pitches lowering his ERA to 1.80 improving to 8-0 on the season.

Game 2 - Washburn 4, Northwest Missouri 2

Washburn jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings after scoring a pair of runs in each of their first two at bats. The Ichabods scored two runs in the first inning without an at bat taking advantage of three walks and an error by the Bearcats. Sorensen recorded his sixth RBI of the afternoon with a sac fly to right scoring Wes Joy.

In the second inning, Kasel led off the inning with a single to right and Vicente Vieyra followed with a single of his own to right. Joy singled to center scoring both Kasel and Vieyra.

The four runs would stand up for the Ichabods as Danny Cook pitched seven innings allowing two earned runs improving to 3-1 on the season. Daren Parker pitched a perfect inning of relief in the eighth inning and Eldon Little picked up his second save of the season with a three-up and three-down inning in the ninth to close the door on the Bearcats.

Vieryra had two hits for the Ichabods and Joy drove in two of the four Ichabod runs. Washburn outhit the Bearcats six to five.
