TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were swept by Missouri Western in its MIAA opener as they dropped the opener 6-5 before falling in the nightcap 5-3. Washburn (13-20, 0-2 MIAA) will continue conference action with a pair of doubleheaders beginning at Northwest Missouri on April 3 and at Nebraska-Omaha the following day.
Game 1 - Missouri Western 6, Washburn 5
The Lady Blues took a 4-2 lead after two innings on
Tish Williams' 40th career home run and her team-leading 10th four-bagger of the season. The homer was a three-run shot in the bottom of the second.
Dani White added her sixth home run of the season in the third inning to give Washburn a 5-2 lead.
The Griffons would score two runs in the fourth inning and a solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings including the game-winning home run by Shannon Pivovar to put the Griffons up 6-5. The home run by Pivovar was her second of the game and her third of the season.
Washburn outhit the Griffons 9-8, but stranded eight baserunners.
Samantha Farris (6-8) took the loss allowing the one earned run in the top of the seventh on Pivovar's home run.
Missouri Western's Allison Jones improved to 15-1 on the season picking up the win.
Game 2 - Missouri Western 5, Washburn 3
The Griffons won their 24th game in a row improving to 27-4 and 2-0 in the MIAA with a 5-3 win over the Lady Blues. The Lady Blues fell behind 2-0 after the Griffons' first at bat, but rallied to cut the lead to 2-1 after one inning as
Ashley Podschun grounded out to score Williams who led off the inning with a double. The Grffions added two more in the third inning.
Washburn scored one in the fourth on a ground out by
Katie Duncan scoring
Whitney Tapp who walked in the inning. The Lady Blues' other run came in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Duncan. The Lady Blues left the bases loaded in the sixth as a liner by
Lindsey Himpel bounced off the glove of the pitcher Jonnelle Belger (8-2) and was snagged by shortstop Ashley Hudson to end the inning.
Washburn left nine runners on base in the game while recording eight hits.
