Ichabods split DH with Truman State

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods walked off with a win in game two to salvage a doubleheader split with Truman State on Friday afternoon at Falley Field. Brett Sorensen hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give WU a 7-5 win in game two. TSU took game one 4-3 in extra innings.

Sorensen blasted his walk-off home run with one out and a runner on second to give the Ichabods (19-25, 12-18 MIAA) the win. Truman State (11-38, 7-27 MIAA) had rallied from deficits of 4-1 and 5-2 to tie the game in the sixth.

Washburn scored two runs in the first and two in the third to open a 4-1 lead. Thomas Holiday had an RBI single in the first and Sorensen also knocked in a run. Holiday knocked in two more runs in the third with a single up the middle. Luis Beltran Lopez knocked in Cameron Kasel in the fourth to give WU a 5-2, but the Bulldogs rallied with a single run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Holiday finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Sorensen also knocked in three.

Dustin Holthaus (3-2) tossed a complete-game allowing five runs, only two earned, on eight hits to earn the win.

Game one started out as a scheduled seven-inning game, but went extras before a winner was decided. The 'Bods jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the second on a Lopez RBI single. TSU tied the game in the third only to have WU regain the lead at 2-1on a Dane Simoneau RBI single. The Bulldogs took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Washburn tied the game in the fifth on a Simoneau RBI groundout. The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth to get the win.

Wes Joy and Lopez had two hits each for the 'Bods, while Simoneau drove in two.

Curtis Hamilton (5-2) pitched a complete-game allowing just four runs, two earned, on seven hits but was tagged with the loss.

Saturday's doubleheader has been moved up to a noon start time. The DH was originally scheduled to start at 1 pm, but was moved due to impending weather.
