Washburn splits DH with Missouri Southern

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods split the first two games of their MIAA series with Missouri Southern on Friday afternoon at Falley Field. The 'Bods won the opener 5-2 and fell 4-1 in the nightcap.

The Ichabods (14-14, 8-8 MIAA) took an early lead in game one and never trailed. Brett Sorensen had an RBI groundout in the first inning to give WU a 1-0 lead. MSSU (19-13, 11-7 MIAA) tied the game in the top half of the fourth, but the Ichabods regained the lead for good in the bottom half. Dane Simoneau had an RBI double to give Washburn a 2-1 lead. Wes Joy drove in a run and later scored in the fifth to give WU a 4-1 lead. Calvin Iversen drove in the 'Bods final run in the sixth.

Curtis Hamilton (4-1) allowed one run on five hits in 5.1 innings to earn the win. Jeremy Heeke and Eldon Little combined for 1.2 innings in relief. Ryan Verfurth (2-3) took the loss for MSSU allowing four runs on five hits.

Game two belonged to Lions' starter Garrett Groom (3-2). He tossed a complete game three-hitter, including six hitless innings, while striking out nine. MSSU plated single runs in the second, third, fourth and eighth innings for the 4-1 win.

The Ichabods scored their lone run in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Sorensen and Simoneau.

Danny Cook (3-2) allowed eight hits and three runs in three innings and was tagged with the loss.

The same two teams will finish off the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
