OMAHA, Neb. -- The Washburn Ichabods split an MIAA doubleheader at Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday afternoon. UNO took game one 7-5 before Washburn earned the split with a 6-5 win in game two.
UNO jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game one with two runs in the first, one in the second and four tallies in the fourth. Washburn (22-26, 15-19 MIAA) rallied with four runs in the fifth on a grand slam by
Brett Sorensen, and one in the sixth on a
Wes Joy RBI double, but it wasn't enough.
Curtis Hamilton (5-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in five innings.
UNO took an early 1-0 lead in game two with a single run in the first. The Ichabods took the lead with a four-run fifth inning. Joy had an RBI single, Sorensen drove in a pair and
Dane Simoneau had an RBI double.
The Mavericks tied the game with three in the bottom half, but WU regained the lead for good on a
Calvin Iversen RBI single run in the top of the sixth. The 'Bods added an insurance run in the eighth on Joy's second RBI of the day.
UNO added a single run in the bottom of the inning, but Washburn held on for the one-run win.
Dustin Holthaus (4-2) pitched eight solid innings allowing five runs, two earned, on nine hits to earn his fourth win of the season.
Jeremy Heeke pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.
