Ichabods finish regular season with DH split

OMAHA, Neb. --Washburn finished off the regular season with a doubleheader split at Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods took the opener 14-4 before falling 11-7 in the nightcap. Washburn finished the season 23-27 overall and 16-20 in the MIAA.

The Ichabods jumped out to a big lead in game one scoring seven runs in the second inning. The Mavericks scored two of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but Washburn blew the game wide open with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a Thomas Holiday bases-loaded triple and back-to-back home runs by Luis Beltran Lopez and Brian Gorges. The 'Bods added a single run in the fifth before UNO plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 14-4 final.

Holiday finished 3-for-3 with four RBI, while Lopez knocked in three. Danny Cook (5-4) allowed just two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts in six innings to earn the win.

Washburn scored a single tally in the second inning of game two for an early 1-0 lead, but rallied with two runs in the third and blew the game open with an eight-run fifth. A single run in the sixth made it 11-1 UNO,  the Ichabods battled back with two runs in the seventh and four in the ninth, but couldn't quite come all the way back. Holiday drove in both runs in the seventh with a bases-loaded single. Dane Simoneau had a two-run double in the ninth, Lopez added a sacrifice fly and Gorges had an RBI double, but WU fell short in their comeback bid.

Wes Joy finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while Holiday finished 5-for-7 on the day with six RBI.

Andrew Miller (2-5) took the loss in game two after allowing six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work.
