Lady Blues win streak halted

OMAHA, Neb. -- The sixth-ranked Washburn Lady Blues volleyball team had their 15-match winning streak halted with a 3-2 setback at 18th-ranked Nebraska-Omaha on Wednesday night. The five-set (26-28, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 12-15) loss was the first of the season for Washburn.

The Lady Blues (15-1, 3-1 MIAA) had three separate set points in the first set, but couldn't close it out and ended up dropping the opening set 26-28 to the Mavericks (14-3, 4-0 MIAA). Washburn rebounded to take set two and rebounded from a set three loss with a 25-20 win in set four to force a fifth and deciding set. The final set was tied at two, but the Mavericks won three straight points and never trailed again.

Freshman outside hitter Hillary Hughes led the Washburn attack with her second career double-double with career-highs of 14 kills and 24 digs. Senior setter Kate Hampson also recorded a double-double with 53 assists and 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Ashley Shepard chipped in 13 kills for the Lady Blues, while sophomore middle hitter Mollie Lacy and freshman Jessica Fey added 11 kills apiece.

The Lady Blues will return to action on Friday when they host ninth-ranked Central Missouri at 7 p.m. at Lee Arena.
