Ichabods sweep Bulldogs in opening doubleheader of 4-game set

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their fourth and fifth straight games over Truman State sweeping a Sunday afternoon twinbill taking the first game 8-7 before taking the second game 7-1. Washburn (7-3, 7-3 MIAA) will be back in action on Monday when they wrap up the series with the Bulldogs (3-11, 0-6 MIAA) in another doubleheader starting at noon at Falley Field.

In the opener, the Ichabods jumped out to a 3-0 in the first inning after an Andy Petz single drove in two runs and Matt Raabe drove in another. The Bulldogs added two in the top of the second to cut into the lead, but the Ichabods came back with two in the second and two more in the third inning taking a 7-3 lead. Brian Clark drove in the pair of runs in the second inning on a single to right center scoring Travis Cruz and Blake Boling. In the third, Thomas Holiday had an RBI single along with Brian Gomez.

The Bulldogs rallied to score five runs in the top of the fifth to tie the score chasing Ichabod starter Daren Parker. Raul Guevara (1-0) came in the game in relief pitching 2 and 2/3 innings for the win as Holiday's single to left center scored Raabe who reached base after being hit by a pitch.

Holiday finished the game with two hits, as did Clark and Petz. Cruz and Raabe each scored a pair of runs in the win. Truman's Tyler Steffan (0-3) took the loss for the Bulldogs.

In the nightcap, Dustin Holthaus (3-0) pitched eight innings allowing the one earned run while striking out five scattering seven hits lowering his ERA to 2.25 this season. The Ichabods jumped on Bulldog starter Michael Staihr (0-1) for five runs in the first inning. Cameron Kasel recorded a 2 RBI double scoring David Wade and Holiday. Gomez doubled to left sending Kasel home. Washburn added two more in the seventh inning after Cruz led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a single by Clark. Holiday drove Cruz home with a single to left center. Wade recorded a sac fly scoring Clark.

Cruz, Clark, Holiday and Kasel all recorded two hits and Cruz and Clark each scored two runs.
