Ichabods split MIAA doubleheader with Truman State

TOPEKA, Kan. --  The Washburn Ichabods dropped game one 10-2, but salvaged a split of an MIAA doubleheader with an 11-4 win in game two over Truman State on Monday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn will host Rockhurst in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Washburn (8-4, 8-4 MIAA) fell behind 7-0 through three innings in game one and couldn't recover. Truman (4-12, 1-7 MIAA) built a 10-0 lead before the Ichabods got on the board. Brian Clark smacked his first home run of the season leading off the sixth inning and Travis Cruz had an RBI single in the seventh for Washburn's only runs.

Danny Cook (1-2) took the loss for the Ichabods allowing four runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of work. Ryan Trimble (3-0) got the win for Truman tossing a complete-game allowing the two runs on five hits.

Game two was scoreless through three innings and tied at one through six innings before Washburn blew it wide open with a seven-run seventh inning. Each team plated a single run in the fourth with Washburn's coming on a Dane Simoneau RBI double.

Clark drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to plate the go-ahead run and Thomas Holiday broke the game wide open with a grand slam. Simoneau had an RBI single as did David Wade.

Truman scored two runs in the eighth, but the Ichabods answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Cameron Kasel had an RBI double and Andy Petz knocked in a run as well.

Brett Ash (1-2) earned his first win of his Washburn career scattering eight hits over seven innings and allowing just one run.

Jordan McLaughlin took the loss for Truman allowing three runs on two hits in 0.1 innings of relief.

Washburn will host Rockhurst on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. The game time has been moved up from 3 p.m.
